As a European, I'm at a remove from American politics but I think what's being done to Kathy Griffin is a shockingly disproportionate response to what amounts to a not very clever, not very funny joke.

Can someone explain to me why she's being nailed to the wall like this? Because she's a woman? Because Donald Trump is deeply insecure? Because beheadings have become associated with Islamic extremists? Is this a Republican strategy to distract American citizens from the more serious issues that are dogging the Trump administration? Everybody I've spoken to here has been incredulous that a comedian, of all people, could be subjected to this kind of treatment by both the media and the government.

What really pains me about all of this is how even the majority of the liberal American media have disassociated themselves from Kathy. In these very reactionary times, is now not the time for unity?

I had to look up who she was, and I figure the media tends to ignore her due to the fact that she's not noteworthy. She runs at the mouth like a lunatic, certainly, but she has no real power over anything or anyone.

It was the first example that came to mind, forgive me. The American news media is shocking on so many levels to me and she was the last person who pushed that particular button for me.

Ted Nugent, on the other hand, we certainly raised a fuss over him.
