Well, I don't forum much, so clearly I haven't figured out how to properly quote or nuthin. (Oh, the frustration. Fucking hate computers.) But Dawkins' book is a wonderful introduction to atheism (although I'm sure there are many others) and I'm convinced he's right. I've been subjected to lots of philosophy at the hands of my English professors, and indeed much of it is insightful and beautifully written. I give the scientists the upper hand when it comes to being objectively correct, however.

I've basically been an atheist since early childhood, but Dawkins' book is the first I have read on the subject, in addition to plenty of Mormon history. I want to read The Believing Brain next, or maybe some Hitchens.

I feel like I'm missing the setup for this joke.

Ohh I see it now.  Sorry, my humor settings have been on the fritz today.  Beep boop.

Yeah, I figured you were going to resort to the junior high if you don't know I'm not going to tell routine.  Smile

Your thinking is not my responsibility ... you're gonna have to do that for yourself.

Seriously though, regarding the OP - does it surprise you?

I would prefer a study on locus of control by political view, but this is similar.

People with an internal locus of control believe that their own actions are the biggest determinant of outcomes in their life.

People with an external locus of control believe that outside forces are the biggest determinant of outcomes in their life.

Doesn't the first seem to go more with conservatives, and the second with liberals?

Perhaps stated this way, rather than in terms of more/less self-control, it's not controversial and makes sense to people.

It does, because it's shorn of the value-judgements that rightly or wrongly come along with judging someone disciplined or indisciplined.

I think it's also closely related to the idea of self-responsibility. I'm not sure that it breaks down so neatly by political outlook, though. I've seen enough conservatives rail against government handouts, and still shout "Keep the government out of my Medicaid!". Or, another example, corporations which donate to small-government Republicans while at the same time lobbying for subsidies. Or, take the Midwestern farmers who largely voted for Trump, but enjoy government price-supports.

The only thing I really got from that is a site called "penis.org" that has nothing to do with porn.

"Also very significant" is fine. But for a lot of liberals, "overwhelming" is more accurate.

Cut the bullshit.

It still boils down to you think you are right.

Sorry, but I already know on the religion front, that humans didn't know shit back then as compared to today. On the economic issue, I also know our history. You are fighting a losing battle. Not politically speaking, that has yet to be determined. But what will happen if humans insist on clinging to old mythology, and let the rich do what they want, well, that won't end well for any side.

You still don't get it on either the issue of religion or economics. Absolute power corrupts. You've stupidly been sold the BULLSHIT idea that anyone objecting you far right religious ideology, or rich monopolies on government policy, that means we value a poverty nanny state. BULL FUCKING SHIT.

Our top 1% is exploiting us, not helping us. Our religious right wants to take us back to a very sick past that for the past 60 years the sane have struggled to climb out of.

Can your side win? Well, they did manage to get a fucking asshole elected, so sure, maybe you will win. OUR POINT is long term, be careful what you wish for.

Once I needed a golf club and wanted to check Dick's Sporting Goods, so I typed in dicks.com.  Big mistake.
