There are just too many, and they can't just let the population overfill the kennel(s). We rescued a dog (beagle-dachshund mix- a real sweetheart) recently. I couldn't believe how many pit bulls were in there. People have all these ideas that don't pan out.

Pretty much. That and space. Also I suspect PETA are “against” neutering as well. So it would be more hypocrisy. Most shelters kill animals, and the “no-kill” shelters have caveats and kill animals too. Unfortunately killing animals in shelters is a necessity. Some are too ill, some are too aggressive and can’t be retrained, some just have no hope of being adopted.

Yup, and as much as I don't like chihuahuas, there was this little guy in there who just sat there with the whites of his eyes showing in fear. There must have been 15 pit bulls in there, barking like mad dogs. My heart went out to him, but I can't just adopt every dog. I hope he found a good home.

Yea, we support a "no kill" shelter and it's more like "try not to kill". We know their turn over can't all be explained by adoption plus natural death.
Just like "rescue" is often "retail rescue". Businesses buy the dogs and say that they are "saving" them and then turn around and sell them for a profit. All this does is provide incentive for puppy mills.

This. I do volunteer work with the Humane Society, and there simply isn't room to house all the homeless animals. Plus that, as Tibs said, some animals are aggressive toward humans. These animals cannot ethically be placed on the adoption market and so have to be put down. Most shelters are basically there to provide food and shelter for animals until they can be returned to their owners or adopted out. They are not homes for animals that don't have them.
Groups like PETA are more about advocacy than animal welfare. At least, that's my opinion...

They contend, and rightly so, that comprehensive reproductive control would reduce the practical requirement to kill sheltered animals by simply reducing the number of animals in question.
(as well as the number of animals that starve, get hit by cars, don;t receive adequate medical or just general care, etc)
They're onerous little shits on so many counts..but not this one. 
@Greenpeace earlier. I read a great article by Patrick Moore (I'll look for it)...and I have to say that I'd have loved to have been a part of greenpeace at the begining..but a creeping sense of frustration calcified the organization into what it is today.
