Y'all have had seventeen hundred fucking years to get the story straight. Your right, it's not good enough.
It's amazing 'science' always seems to 'find' whatever it is funded for, and never the oppsite. Drich.

It seems irrelevant to belief, doesn't it?  Particularly since the question implies that people can and do believe without that "head knowledge" in the first place.

Not really, but it's popular with the evangelical pamphlet industry.  Wink

As with any other thing.  People believe in it until they don't.  People believe in santa, too...and then they don't.  It's ludicrous to doubt the status of their santa belief in the past based upon their lack of santa belief today..or the ease(however that can be determined) with which they lost it.  In any case..you'll find that falling out of belief is rarely easy, by any description.

I doubt that very much, out of all subjects.  It seems more likely, to me, that you are in the possession of and communicating an incomplete narrative. What about this subject, though...leads you to believe that answering "god" on a test would be acceptable? Applications for the god response would seem necessarily limited to a specific subset of questioning.

RE: Question
I've invented a type of aerosol spray called "Theist B Gone" that gets rids of annoying door knockers.

It doesn't come in a can.

Instead, it's really hot and is distributed by flame thrower.

Catholic-lady, et al. What's your take on the last book of the bible?

Edit: I tried to fix the quote thingy, but his tongue of brass was licking my ear.

I'm not very familiar with it, to be honest. The focus is mainly on the life/teachings of Jesus, and Catholic lay folks in general have a horrible reputation for not being very knowledgeable of the bible.

And former Catholics who are now atheists have a reputation for being very knowledgeable of the Bible. Coincidence? I think not! Big Grin

You reckon that's why?  It's that they don't know how to defend some x?  I'd suspect that people leave their religions because they no longer believe in some x...even if they were aware of all the right verses to reference, personally.  Elephant in the room...though, are we sure that's when it starts?

Good question.   I have considered this.  A person can have vast amounts of "head knowledge"  .  Like you said they may even know the right verses of whatever to reference to actually defend.  If they walk away so easily or not so easily, did they really believe what they "believed" in the first place?  Does that even make sense?

*my bolding*

I wouldn't be too surprised to learn that an individual professor might say or do something that seems ill considered or heavy handed.  Every group is made up of individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Of course appeals to authority as justification for an argument are discouraged and down graded in most any college course involving ideas.  This is an example of how the excessive and irrational commitment of Christians to the bible runs counter to what higher education is all about.  Quoting scripture to argue for a secular point doesn't actually support that point.  All it does is make the case that all people who fetishize the bible should agree with you, and that doesn't matter in a secular setting.

RE: Question
A lot of it comes down to choosing between wanting to know what is true or settling for what feels comfortable. If one doesn't make a genuine effort towards the former, it seems very easy to slip into the latter.

When beliefs are very vague, often unfalsifiable, and don't actually contradict reality, it's easy to cling on to them. It's also easy to support incorrect beliefs due to confirmation bias, the placebo effect, pattern spotting and reliance on emotional reasoning.

The fact that people from different religions, worshipping different gods, can be totally convinced they are having very real experiences with beings that can't all actually exist (so they claim) shows that either:

1) There's many of these gods after all

2) There's one God but it's fucking with everyone

3) It's fully possible to have all the symptoms of a relationship with a God but actually be imagining it all
