I'm very sorry for your loss but i cannot support an unjust method of punishment .

Oh well.

So long as you're sorry, that justifies the death of their loved one!

See, I don't think it's worth the risk of releasing (look out, more plain talk) a mass murdering piece of shit back into society.
I'm not saying i'm sorry justifies it but it's all i can morally do

And i think it's worth it to give them a chance and more importantly not become a cruel society that exemplifies vengeance.

I’m not trying to be dishonest.  I think of justice as the person who harmed is punished; to the point they can feel the pain they caused.

Is that the purpose of justice? Or is it just a crude means, chosen in a cruder time and susceptible to improvement, adopted in the hopes that it will contribute towards attainment of Justice?

Did what?

Yes based on good behavior thus the possibility they have changed

Quote:Thar's not punishment. It's an extended holiday!
Yes it is because prison is a punishment

Quote:Where does it end, though?

"50 years is inhumane!"

"40 years is inhumane!"
Could be depending on how old the prisoner is to how long they have left .

It is the purpose of justice.

You guys are making a slippery slope fallacy.

A slippery slope fallacy is only a fallacy when the slope isn't slippery.

Looking at our system of justice, and our history with the death penalty, do you think that the slope isn't slippery?   I think that we've already fallen entirely on our asses.

Not that I have to hang my hat there. It's just one of the reasons I've included in thread.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

More then once i might add

I'm just going to clarify i totally reject the idea of the "just dessert theory of justice " i argue it has no moral foundation and is steeped in mystic even religious foundations .

It ends whenever they're no longer a danger to others.  If that's never..it's never.  If it's five years, it's five years.  We put people in these cages to prevent them from doing further harm..not so that we can do harm to them.

And many reoffend when released.

That sounds more like an argument to keep them incarcerated and/or in treatment than a reason to kill them.

And many don't and that argues for a greater investment in rehabilitation.
