How many atheists here use that word to describe yourselves? How would you define it? I'm hesitant in using it because the word has a lot of supernatural baggage.

Using the word Spiritual

I don't use it but I define it as "bullshit."
I might use it, if I had a solid working definition. Otherwise I dont bother with the labels.

Hell no, I don't use that word to describe myself. I don't believe in the supernatural and that includes spirits and any other unseen woo.

.
I don't use the word spiritual, nor do I describe myself as spiritual.
I detest the idea that people should "be spiritual, if not religious." There's simply no reason for spirituality. If you find it to be something that's important in your life, then great. I don't necessarily dislike spiritual people or concepts... but I just don't really see the use for it in my life. I need to go to work, I have bills to pay. I like to hike, write, draw, do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, among other things... when exactly am I supposed to fit in "spirituality?" And what exactly is that and what would it look like? It just makes no sense in my life and I see no use for it.
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.
Don't use it. Basically the same as religious, look up the definitions.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.
I was having dinner with some local writer friends a few nights ago and I mentioned that I don’t consider myself a spiritual person. They gasped as if I said some kind of crazy thing and basically said that whether I accept it or not, my writing reveals that I’m VERY spiritual and that I’m oozing spirituality. Lol! Whatever, man. If people are happy by labeling me as spiritual, because they have no other way to understand how I can feel things deeply even though I’m woo-less, then so be it. I don’t care. It doesn’t bother me. I just smile, raise my brows as I take a sip from my drink and continue to listen to these awesome people. So they think I have a spirit! Lol could be worse.

I'd call myself "spurtual", since I am deeply moved when I ejaculate. Other than that, no.
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.
No, I'd never describe myself that way because I feel it's pretty much a meaningless word.

Unless you're are using 'spiritual' as an adjective to describe someone as being full of fighting spirit (in which case I have a better adjective for you, 'tenacious'), it is entirely supernatural in context. So yeah, using 'spiritual' for me is akin to saying 'I enjoy minority magical wish-thinking and would really appreciate if you gave it the same faux legitimacy as more mainstream magical wish-thinking'. |
