No worse than beauty pageants, which is to say shameful.

What kind of parenting is this?

This is very disturbing! It's child abuse!
It's like cockfighting or dog fighting, but with little kids! Shameful... 42

Encouraging unmitigated displays of aggression for the pleasure of the crowd is no worse than dressing up your child like a dehumanized doll for the pleasures of the crowd? Hmm... I can see how you might rank both as the same. However, I would argue that it is advisable to rank little kid "cock fighting" slightly worse than little kid "human doll display session." Yes, the dehumanizing result is the same. Quote:You are free, of course, to better lay out why your comparison is valid. Both encourage competition where there should be none. Furthermore, both are basically the same thing for different sexes. In beauty pageants, girls are catty and horrible to each other emotionally, which is to say nothing of their twisted mothers. Obviously physical fights involving children encourage being horrible to each other physically. They are just different sides of the same coin. The potential for physical injury is obviously more of an issue in these fights, which would be one area I would say the one is worse than the other. That being said, I was speaking on the parenting aspect of it. Both are equal in the parenting department.
I'm not sure where I stand on this, possibly because when I was younger (I'm talking age 6+) I was part of a Judo club at school, and I fought in various matches. We didn't have any safety gear other than floor mats, but it was a very fun experience. As far as I can tell from the article, there are no punches or kicks, which means then chances of someone getting hurt and quite minimal.
I also have no problem with beauty pageants. (September 22, 2011 at 6:50 pm)Shell B Wrote:Quote:You are free, of course, to better lay out why your comparison is valid. I disagree with you on the last part. For one thing, physical injury and trauma bring with it emotional trauma. However, in case of the Beauty Pageant, it is nothing but emotional trauma (and a lot of that). However, due to each situation evaluated requiring case-by-case inspection, I yield that determining which one is objectively worse is impossible. That said, it is this ape's opinion that the physical violence and subsequent trauma on the average is more likely to be worse together than the emotional trauma in said Pageant. In addition, the worse the Beauty Pageant will produce is some stressed out, emotionally fragile and needy girl who would more likely, given the general attitudes and expectations in America towards women, be married off and breeding. The worse this may produce is more violent men who have more experience using their brawn than brains from a young age. Ergo, from a parenting perspective, producing a child who will be married off into a most likely unhappy marriage and potential spousal abuse/antics is preferable to having your child locked up in prison for stretches of time, never able to get a real job in their life again (ex-cons are the bottom of the barrel workforce-wise). We have a saying in my family:"No sense ,no feeling" seems right in this case. Poor little bastards; as adults one may well be a criminal the other a pastor. Wait, that didn't come out right. Well, while I don't particularly believe that violence is "dehumanizing" (the bar for humanity is fairly low). It's not what we have decided that we want for ourselves. Kids should know how to fight (imo), but this is pretty ridiculous. Gonna have to file it away with questionable parenting (same place as child beauty pageants, as others have said).
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
I don't know about anyone else, but having violence glorified by cage fighting that is cheered on by drunken adults is not how I want my kid to learn how to defend himself.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
