Damned Pervert Priests - and other assorted Holy Scumbags

RE: Damned Pervert Priests - and other assorted Holy Scumbags
Time to throw an Ernie?

Saunders, it seemed, had made a remarkable, nay unprecedented, recovery from Alzheimer’s. Within four months of his release, he was charging £16,000 a month for consultancy services.
It's amazing 'science' always seems to 'find' whatever it is funded for, and never the oppsite. Drich.

Since 1998—380 Southern Baptist church leaders have faced sexual misconduct allegations—resulting in more than 700 victims. 220 offenders have been convicted or took plea deals

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Another cardinal goes down in flames

Quote:French Cardinal Philippe Barbarin said Thursday (March 7) he will offer his resignation to Pope Francis after a court found the cardinal guilty of failing to report allegations of sexual abuse of minors by a priest.

The Lyon court’s surprise decision was seen by alleged victims as a victory for child protection and a strong signal to the Catholic Church.

The court handed Barbarin a six-month suspended prison sentence for not reporting the cases in the period between July 2014 and June 2015.

Two bishops in Baltimore are barred from “priestly duties” over sexual harassment claims. Seems to me that sexual harassment is among priestly duties, if precedent is any guide.

This time they sexually harassed adults

Quote:The announcement shined a light on the alleged abuse of adults, an often overlooked corner of the Catholic Church abuse scandal, and drew parallels to the downfall of Theodore E. McCarrick, a former cardinal and archbishop of Washington, who was expelled from the priesthood last month after the church found him guilty of abusing children and adult seminarians.

No shit. Did you think it was just the Catholics?

My suspicion is that sexual abuse of children occurs in any organisation in which individuals have power over children. So that means any organised religion, of whatever flavour, as well as in say schools and boarding schools and organisations such as boy scouts.

I have read of such abuses taking place within at least one orthodox Jewish community as well as within the Amish.

I'm willing to bet that the scandals involving the Catholic Church  are as a drop in the ocean. That this issue will be with us for the rest of this century, at least. I have reached this conclusion   from learning that the abuse seems to be systemic, not isolated cases.  Any practice which becomes the norm is exceedingly difficult to change. Especially so when surrounded by  deeply entrenched  silence and secrecy, where victims are  made to feel ashamed, and as if  they are  the  criminals

Yeah, you can't talk about child abuse anymore without mentioning Catholics. That's why even that woman at NBS (at 3 minute mark) first mentions Catholics and then goes on about JW

Well, in schools individuals have power over children and yet there aren't much sex abuse. The problem is rather that in religious organizations you have individuals have power over adults who believe how priests are these extraordinary good people who simply can't be wrong or do no bad stuff. They see them as authority which they must blindly follow. For instance this is how Catholics explain it in that classic documentary "Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God":

When a man is ordained a priest, he is changed ontologically. He is made a different brand of human being. A little less than the angels. These are people set apart. They are called, they are chosen by God, they want to protect the sacramentality, the supernatural element and so that is why they were very, very careful to do anything to the priest.

Pope Rejects Resignation of French Cardinal Convicted of Abuse Cover-Up

Pope Francis has rejected the resignation of a French cardinal, the Vatican announced on Tuesday, despite the cardinal’s conviction this month for covering up decades-old allegations of sexual abuse by a priest in his diocese.

A French court found Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, archbishop of Lyon, guilty on March 7 of failing to report abuse to the authorities, and imposed a six-month suspended sentence.

The pope’s decision came only weeks after he had concluded a meeting with church leaders from around the world on how to best confront the scourge of clerical child abuse. The speakers there urged the church’s bishops to take the issue seriously and not to protect their own, or let abuse fester in their ranks.

Cardinal Barbarin was charged with failing to report the accusations to the authorities, as required under French law. Father Preynat is awaiting trial on charges of sexual abuse of minors.

Pope Francis? More like Pope Failure.

West Virginia’s attorney general filed a lawsuit against the state’s Roman Catholic diocese and a former high-ranking bishop Tuesday for “knowingly employ[ing] pedophiles.”
