Some people enjoy being on their knees in a receiving position. Not judging..just noting.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I suspect that in history, this is what most people have meant by "belief," in a religious context. Maybe I mentioned earlier that "belief" can be assent to a proposition ("I believe the world is round") or commitment to a value ("I believe in equal rights for women"). This is a bit too simple, but I think relevant to religion. It's interesting to go through the New Testament, and everywhere that Jesus or Paul says "belief," read it to mean "commit your life to." And everywhere they say "Kingdom of God," read that to mean "what our world would be like if we cared about each other." Some verses support this reading more than others, but I suspect that at first Christians had something much like this in mind. Narrowing the meaning of the word "belief" to just "I hold it to be a fact" probably comes from our modern view that every text is supposed to be read like a science book. RE: Belief

Oh dear, the watchmaker argument. Look it up. Why snicker,, it's not as if you've actually made your point. A fact can imply (suggest) a great many things. It may correctly be called 'evidence'. However, that is not the same as an inference (conclusion) I think you need to distinguish between evidence and proof. Evidence is anything whatsoever presented in support of an argument or position. eg Logical argument, all sacred writings, commentaries. written accounts of say miracles, and personal testimony ,are ALL evidence of say the existence of God. What they are not, is proof. Formal logic does not make truth statements. ALL logical propositions have the caveat' IF A---then-------- The premise is always accepted for the sake of argument. The inference ( conclusion) from that premise is true IF AND ONLY IF the original premise is true. RE: Belief

Yes, there's a long and noble tradition of people reading things into the Bible that simply aren't there. Boru

As an ex-Catholic I blame hippies.
The Jews have been blamed for enough. If it wasn'y for a hippie dude named Yeshua, there wouldn't be Christians or Muslims. Sandal wearing prick! Playing Cluedo with my mum while I was at Uni: "You did WHAT? With WHO? WHERE???" |
