Star Trek: Picard - Way Better then I had Hoped
January 26, 2020 at 11:38 pm
I might be described as a Trekkie snob by some. I was sorely disappointed by Star Trek: Enterprise and absolutely puked my guts over the abomination of the Abrahms reboot movies. I similarly eschew Star Trek: Discovery.
I had no hope at all for Star Trek: Picard as I believed it was to take place outside the the established timeline of the original series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space 9 and Star Trek: Voyager. But based on reviews on Youtube, took a trial run on CBS All-Access and watched the pilot myself.
I'm impressed.
I won't presume to speak for any other Star Trek fan as I have come to realize we are addicted to the show for different reasons. I just suggest to any fan of 24th-century Star Trek that you give this a try. It looks very interesting, like it might be a good contribution to the Star Trek universe created by Gene Roddenberry.

Yeah, just watched it. Not too bad. Although he's a great actor (and executive producer!), I still feel he's beyond his used by date.
I'll keep watching it. But I must say, I also didn't watch Enterprise but I'm liking Discovery.... a lot!
Each to their own.

I was nervous about this series
1. I thought they might go too dark and cynical and try and make it too gritty thous divorcing it from TNG completely .But likely it stops from going full depressing and i'm happy there is a bit of the old Picard still there
2.I thought they might go way to hard on the nostalgia .But while present it doesn't drown everything out . I like the fact it's telling a new story while acknowledging its roots .
It was a bit rushed but that's too be expected as it has a lot of stuff to establish for a 20 year timeskip from Nemesis .But it isn't overwhelming so it's all good .

Each to their own. Enterprise was alright especially close to the end when Archer is forging alliances .Discovery had a good premise but JJ just doesn't get star trek .

At work.
Liked the first episode, so there's hope.
I liked the 'Original' era stuff. Would watch it on the week end on the telly when it aired.
Liked 'The Next Genetation.' Though, being older, some episodes didn't square away with me some what.
Deep Space Nine, while also having its share of good episodes and characters...... didn't wholly grab my fascination.
Voyager had me annoyed, scowling and dissatisfied from the first episode.
The three Abrams movies i found good. The characterizations were quite well done/spot on. Yeah, some plot aspects didn't quite hit the mark but still a better, over all, affair than some of the previous films.
Enterprise had a good cast (I've always thought Scott Bakula quite a talented actor) was sadly let down by poor scripts.
Something, I fear, that 'Discovery' has also fallen victim of. Not having access to the 'Pay to veiw' option I can do little more than listen somewhat vicariously to others reports on the matter.
Cheers.

J J gets how he can’t hear anything about Star Trek, or Star Wars, over the sound of his own awesomeness.
The reboot Star Trek, and the last 3 Star Wars movies, is all about how a moron, J J, can feel smart through pure self-absorption, and think he can wring it on everything and pull it off.

After watching 1st episode, my opinion is that Stewart is too old and these new young characters are not interesting. Also it seems that creators have no interest in essence of Star Trek so it comes off as a generic scifi show.
Indeed, it looks like it's going to be as these scifi shows go today: boring and undeveloped characters, overly complicated story that stops making sense and the rest are just CG effects.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

What network/channel is it being shown on?
