I think maybe you two are not as far apart as it may seem.

I mean, there may not be many combatants at work today who are directly motivated by the conscious memory of 300-year-old evils. But that doesn't mean that there's not a sort of chain reaction. 

For example, the English landlords who made the conscious economic decisions that caused the Great Famine, for their own gain and to the ruin of many (and without theological motives), possessed their power due to events that came before. And much hate that came after was the domino-effect of that, whether contemporaries had it in mind or not. 

I think the break-up of Yugoslavia and other places show that long memories of evil can be overcome, but show up again when they can be useful tools in rallying modern movements. People get along and intermarry just fine until there's some political issue, and then suddenly they're all mad again about the Middle Ages.

From NI to Yugoslavia, without an ounce of self awareness. The conflict between christianity and islam kicked that one off. We had a great time keeping those assholes from murdering each other in their sleep.

Pretty similar really, particularly the bit about a shared ethnicity chunked up by disparate religions.

It's almost as if there's a pattern here where religion becomes increasingly divisive with regard to self determination and political will, until such a time as otherwise civil administrations fail and people with everything in common see no alternative but the extermination of the other.

There's probably a comment about the grand ole us of a buried in there too - crystal ball and all that.

People can and have committed murder over centuries old events. I have heard the rhetoric and seen the actions. Every Irish person has.

It doesn't strike you as face-palm worthy that people would demand apologies for actions their own ancestors committed?
The history has been distorted and edited to present an exclusive 'us & them' view hiding the fact their own ancestors were the ones committing the wrongs as well as being on the receiving end. That is how human history works.
As humans they all fecked each others brains out every opportunity they got and thus all of us with Irish ancestry count every single individual involved amongst our ancestors, oppressed and oppressor.
