Nothing to do with maths. It’s to do with the rules of the game. If you get a pawn all the way to your opponents first rank, you can play it as a queen (technically, you can play it as any piece you like). 

Since there are 16 pawns in the game, you can reach a total of 18 queens.

I don't know shit about chess, but I am assuming, the rules allow lower ranked pieces to get to the other side of the board and if they do, they can be elevated to higher rank? I only know that there are two kings and two queens, so that I why I thought this was a trick question. 

I admit I am a dumbass on chess, but 18 is far bigger than two when the pieces first start out.
