Just because Joe Biden is a Catholic does not mean he will run a theocracy. However, given the American religious rights contempt for church-state separation, I wouldn't put it past the judges to rule on religious grounds or in favor of religious causes that undermine secularism.

I would prefer both parties refrain from pulpit politics and making claims in public office as to what God wants.

That’s not really the case. The percentage of US Catholics who regularly attend church services has dropped like a paralyzed falcon. You only find the hardline, old-school Catholicism among the ever shrinking minority who attend services at least once per week. In fact, it’s not a stretch to describe most American Catholics as ‘reform’ (‘liberal’ is probably too strong a term at this point).

USians have a helluva lot more to fear from Protestant hardliners than from Catholic ones.

It's technically is nondenominational. As it's built on what they are opposed to rather than individual denominal beliefs. Where they fall on the political spectrum rather than what church they attend. This is why you can get far-right Catholics to side with far-right Evangelicals. Sure they will shit talk each other and when they're in power they will likely all turn on each other. But they have the same enemies list and the same social causes and more of a reason to work together then stand apart.

Many if not Most of those people you talk about have de facto abandoned the church, as evidenced by their lack of participation in its activities. They have no de iure way to leave.

The situation in Ireland is that the country is 80% catlick officially, but in reality about 20-30% catlick. That's what we'll see in the US too.

And, of course, Machiavelli advised people in power to do bad shit only when necessary, and do what they can to not have it backfire. To be fair, perhaps something like this might be necessary, but maybe intimidating enough Republican senators to Either change their vote or abstain. Or, to take an example that happened not too long ago, when Joe Biden comes to power, threaten to pack the courts unless some justices change their tune.

But that’s not what Carve was suggesting. He’s promoting the use of violence and terror tactics against a legal participant in a legal process because he doesn’t like the outcome.
