Once again the Vatican tries to claim authority it does not have in reality. Vatican says it cannot bless same sex marriages/unions.

The Pope is not saying what the laws are. He isn’t even saying gay Catholics can’t be married. He’s saying the Church will not bless such unions. Put another way, he’s saying that if you’re gay, you cannot be married by a Catholic priest in a Catholic chapel under the auspices of the Catholic Church.
And the Vatican absolutely DOES have that authority. Boru

The Pope is a pretty important guy among the Catholics. He doesn't claim to write the rules for everyone.

Yeah, like it or not, and, frankly, I don’t, Francis is talking solely about what the RCC can do about gay marriage, and since he’s the head of the church, he’s well within his rights to say what he said, and the world’s gay couples (as long as they live in a jurisdiction that recognizes it) are well within their rights to find someone else to bless their relationship.

Holy people only have the power followers give them. The "not blessing" is basically passive aggressive emotional blackmail. He doesn't have to have any legal power, but he does have power over people who buy his crap.
