What do you think about gun control?

RE: What do you think about gun control?
Gun death is a pretty uniformly criticized stat, and even more so amongst anti-gun folks - no matter the country or cause.

You're living in the upside down - searching for hypocrisy where it doesn't exist - ignoring that there's plenty of actual hypocrisy to point too - for all the good an appeal to hypocrisy does..anyway.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

The anti gun people are even more guilty of thiis.

Think not?

Then why are you harping about the death rate of the US when so many other countries have much higher rates per capita? (Honduras, Guatamala, ect)

Reason given by antis -

They are not first world countries.....

I don't find it very unreasonable to be more concerned about gun-related deaths in the place where you live than in the places where you don’t (this is also why I’m not really worried about drunk drivers in Serbia).

I guess I have little to worry about.

Our township hasn' t seen a shooting since the neighbor' s wife capped him in the chest with a .25 auto - 30 years ago. He lived. They' re still married.

Go figure. I can' t explain it....

Well, the fact is that the estimates of how many lives are saved by guns each year tend to be around the order of magnitude bigger than the estimates of how many people are killed by guns each year. The estimates that guns save around 3 million people per year are probably bullshit. But so are the estimates that it is less than 50'000 per year. The estimates that guns save 300'000 people per year in the US are probably close to the truth, don't you think?

Where do these estimates come from? How are they collected? What is the methodology for determining if a gun saves a life? Why are the high and low estimates 'bullshit'?

Unlikely.  Though I could easily see 300k people saying they needed a gun, or that a gun saved them.

Yes - this is the NRA. Read a few of these reports - in each case the media outlet that made the report is cited.

It is kind of hard to call it biased reporting with so many different sources.

...

The simplest answer is - when a gun saves a life - it isn't considered news that needs reporting.

But there’s no way to tell if those incidents resulted in saving lives (although it seems unarguable that they were self defense).

For example, the story about the woman who shot an intruder multiple times - the story describes this as ‘an attempted burglary’. Unless we know for certain that the intruder was there to kill someone, it isn’t possible to say that the woman’s use of a gun saved anyone’s life.

To be clear, I’m not arguing that there are cases where private citizens with guns DO save lives. That can’t be sensibly refuted. I’m arguing that the estimates used by FA are - at best - suspect. He seems to want to make up numbers until he finds one that fits his narrative.

It is amazing to me that the people on the Flat Earth Society forum tend to be rather anti-gun. I'd expect Flat-Earthers to be anti-government and pro-gun, but I was wrong about that: https://www.theflatearthsociety.org/foru...ic=89883.0
