My daughter was really upset that she wasn't able to successfully breastfeed but at least she lived through her post-delivery complications.

I was resigned to not breastfeeding because at that age, I was plagued with strep throat and constantly on antibiotics.

I was just going to a followup to 'no abortion no matter what'. I look for them to go after birth control, women to be afraid to seek medical care after a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancies killing more women, and now - potentially being punished for not breastfeeding...the formula shortage happening right now, makes me suspicious.

Never waste a good crisis, they say. If there's some shitty angle to this that can be gamed for effect, I guarantee someone's working on it.

Ironically, some of my earliest posts on these boards were about the situation that ultimately lead to this. I was working, at the time, for an algae processing company that was a victim of it's own success. When we went down to four regular employees and I had so much time on my hands that I wrote a novel at work - and after that, looking for another place to just write, found AF - I started to wonder what would happen with formula when the initial stockpile ran out, as our business had shuttered almost immediately afterward. The bacteria involved in the (non)recall is endemic to the processing of additives that became a de facto standard of formula about ten years back - in fact, its a part of that process. There's actually no way to make formula..or formula as the american consumer demands it..that doesn't carry that risk - and fewer people making it now because the constituent ingredients are shelf stable dry and were bought by the weight, way back in the day. There was a big contract, fulfilled, and then no other business. It's (potentially)reactivated every time the end mix is wetted.

Now, ofc, there's a plague, too. A nation that fails to secure unquestionably healthful nutrition for it's infants, while suffering a mortality rate unrepresentative of it's status as The first world country, finds itself short on cheap fucked up formula. A more complete failure is difficult to imagine - but was entirely predictable even before covid.

American women should reject terms like 'uterus' and 'womb' and start referring to that organ as the 'AR-15'. Can't imagine Republicans defending the idea that they should pass laws restricting what a woman can do with her AR-15.
