Why do people even put themselves in such ridiculous situations in the first place? Seems pretty irresponsible.

Evidently, you don't understand because you're not a brainwashed Catholic.

"Good" Catholics obey the rules of their religion and the dictates of the Pope without question. Having babies is in accordance with God's will. Hence, for them, they are not acting irresponsibly.

My guess is that the pope and priests think that they talking directly to God and therefore think that they have the authority to write books on marital problems, although they have not just never been married, but are virgins.
They think that they are like Jedis talking to the force.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

It's still irresponsible. Catholics are just using "what the Pope says" as an excuse to further their lineage when that absolutely does not need to happen.

Of course it's irresponsible. Now go argue that with a Catholic priest.

Most Catholics don't believe in any of it; they have other motives for participating.

"other motives" that make them think going to Mass every Sunday is an intelligent thing to do? Those "other motives" had better be fucking stellar.
