People keep tiptoeing around the real issue, which isn’t donald trump or Maga, it is the close to half of the american people have so little regard for the meaning or practice of democracy that they would readily embrace any crass demagogue who promises to give what they perceive to be their own kind an structural economic or social advantage over other people in the society.
it is no use to pretend donald trump fooled them, the reason why he could fool them is for them, democracy is merely a stick to beat other people with, not anything they would sacrifice any perceived opportunity to gain unfair advantage in order to preserve,

Quote:President Joe Biden heads into the election year showing alarming weakness among stalwarts of the Democratic base, with Donald Trump leading among Hispanic voters and young people. One in 5 Black voters now say they'll support a third-party candidate in November.

Here’s a thought: it’s plain that the Supremes aren’t likely to kick Trump out of the election entirely. But what if they were to kick it back to the states to decide? That’s a real possibility, since the Court has been unwilling to involve itself in the electoral process any more than they absolutely have to.
The MAGA faithful who (by some accounts) make up roughly a third of the Republican rank and file, aren’t really interested in politics - they’re just interested in Trump. If Trump is off the ballot in blue or blue-leaning states, it seems to me that a lot of the MAGAts would simply not show up to vote, as they aren’t particularly concerned about down-ballot races in a presidential election year. This would strongly weaken any Republican advantage in the red-leaning districts of blue states, and could result in a significant Democratic majority in both houses.

Yes. And the news people can shut the lower 2/3 of their heads about it causing a "civil war". We've already seen how easily a nest of magats can be stirred up to commit major crimes. Low level shit like punching out neighbors would be child's play.

There seems slim chance of that with Thomas on the court, especially rubbing elbows with Gorsuch and Alito. And I'm not sure I'd disagree. It is a constitutional issue.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

“There’s a story going around saying that Martin Sheen is supporting [Kennedy] for president,” Bradley Whitford, who played White House deputy chief of staff Josh Lyman on the long-running NBC political drama, wrote Thursday on social media.
“The story is incorrect,” Whitford wrote to his more than 475,000 followers on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Martin asked us to post this on his behalf,” Whitford said, before sharing a message from Sheen, who famously played “West Wing’s” fictional President Josiah Bartlet.
“I wholeheartedly support President Joe Biden and the democratic ticket in 2024,” Sheen said, according to Whitford.
A similar sentiment appeared on Sheen’s verified Instagram page, with a graphic on his Instagram Story saying, “I do not endorse RFK Jr nor will I be attending his party.” The Instagram post also reiterated Sheen’s support for Biden’s reelection bid.
The 83-year-old actor is the second high-profile figure in recent days to distance himself from Kennedy’s campaign. On Wednesday, singer Dionne Warwick said she didn’t agree to attend a fundraiser later this month for Kennedy, despite claims from a super PAC backing the White House hopeful listing her as a “well wisher guest.” Sheen’s name was also among the entertainers listed for the event.

Trump is now questioning Nikki Haley’s eligibility to be president on the basis that Haley - a woman born in the US to naturalized American citizens - may not be a natural born citizen herself.
In political science jargon, this is known as ‘scared shitless’.
