Russia and Ukraine
RE: Russia and Ukraine
Meanwhile, ukraine launched Operation Spiderweb today, attacking four aviation bases (and a naval yard). Two outside of moscow, one near the arctic ocean, and one on the mongolian border. 40 aircraft are reported to have been hit, a concentration of targets being one leg of russias nuclear triad - their strategic bombers. Russian media report that an emergency meeting is underway in the kremlin.

Ukraine directly attacked them and occupied their territory, crossing a red line russia had rattled the saber on every day of the week for years.  The nukes did not fly.  This, because russian command could not be sure that their nukes worked properly and would not be intercepted, while they knew any attempt to use them would cause a global shitstorm of missiles and strikes incoming..and..if it went nuclear, the retaliatory strike absolutely would work and certainly get through.  Additionally, they understand that ukraine has no real interest or ability to conquer russia.  Icing on the cake - they do not care about their fucking citizens.  Full stop.

That's how they've managed to go on as long as they have, and also why they can't scrape up a win.  Any threat they make, not just nuclear but any threat that begins with "for the defense of"..is utterly full of shit.  They have as much interest in defending russia or russians as ukraine does in occupying moscow.  It will go on as long as putin can convince the people under him to keep losing money and not a single US dollar further.

The Ukrainians smuggled hundreds of drones into Russia and from there launched attacks on at least five strategic bomber bases -- these are bombers which are launching cruise-missiles into Ukraine -- which destroyed about 40 of those bombers. It should be noted that those bombers are part of the Russian nuclear deterrent force.

Not only can Russian not conquer Ukraine, they cannot even defend their own domestic air-bases.

Quote:President Trump was not informed of a recent Ukrainian attack on Russia, The Hill’s sister network NewsNation confirmed Sunday.

An administration official told NewsNation’s Tanya Noury that the president was not given a heads-up about the drone attack that a Ukrainian security official alleged destroyed more than 40 planes well within Russian territory, according to The Associated Press.

In the first few months of his second term, Trump and his administration have pushed for an end to the war between Ukraine and Russia. The war, which began during former President Biden’s term, recently passed the three-year mark.

RE: Russia and Ukraine
Those 40 Bombers would amount to abut 30% of Russia's strategic bomber fleet, although it seems "only" 7 are visually confirmed to be totally written off. Still, its a huge blow to russias military, its reputation, and probably morale. It shows that Ukraine is still well capable of defending itself, particularly by making use of asymptotic warfare. It also shows how incredibly efficient and effective (cost/effect) new tools like drones can be. A strategic bomber is not exactly cheap to produce.

With the rule of russian equipment being what it's been in this conflict, 30% of x is very likely every operational x, and irreplaceable.

Yes, one could assume that, particularly of elderly systems which require quite an amount of maintenance, 30% is a good estimate. In WWII for example, only 30% of german u-boats were actually on partol (with another 30% each on their way to patrol areas or in training) at any given time.

Considering how vast Russia is, those drones could pose a threat comparable to Panzerschiffe. You may have not many of them, but the threat of being able to be invisible until you strike whenever you want and wherever you want, being able to pick weak targets...even in a best case scenario this will force Russia to commit to take disproportionally big efforts to protect its assets. We are not even talking about the fact that those TU95 and T22Ms are Cold War era stuff, that just cant be replaced. Only the Tu160 is more recent and in production afaik.

RE: Russia and Ukraine
My understanding is that the drones were secreted into Russia prior to launch. If true, that would greatly limit the potential for operations of this type.
