Wow this got to be a joke, are we really actually debating if whether not slavery is ethical/acceptable or not?! I mean this got to be a fucking joke. Only delusional people could even think, at this point, that it is okay.

Does Atheism make sense?

Well, I suppose you would have had to be there. Perhaps the slaves punched in and worked an 8 to 5 day the way we do now. Then they went home and did as they wished. So perhaps 'slaves' was just a euphemism just as 'wage slave' is today. Who is to say who was owned really, the 'slave' who did the work or the slave 'owner' who had to find work for them everyday when they showed up with their lunch pails. Putting no stock in the bible that stuff is entirely wasted on us.
Really? Obviously, Whateverist, we have to use scripture to find out what scripture has to say about slavery. Refusing to look at scripture to determine scripture's opinion on slavery is like closing your eyes, plugging your ears and shouting "LALALA! I REFUSE TO LOOK AT EVIDENCE! THE BIBLE SAYS YOU SHOULD MURDER SLAVES AND I REFUSE TO BELIEVE OTHERWISE REGARDLESS OF COUNTER-EVIDENCE!" and this whole debate is pointless. Look at my cited evidence or just say that you don't wish to debate anymore, im okay with either.

We had this discussion already, scarcely a week ago. I can't speak for whateverist, but I can say for myself, I don't care to repeat myself quite so soon.

No, you have to look at what scripture says because you think there must be a good case for slavery if the bible says so. Since I already have some moral clarity on the slavery issue I don't really care what it says. Of course if I was confused about whether to sell my daughter into slavery the bible is the last place I'd look since I just don't give a flying fuck what your toilet paper dispenser says about anything. For the record, we're not having a debate. You're just saying off the wall weird shit which demonstrates you can't think for yourself and have no moral compass on board, so you are in no way qualified to debate anyone about anything. You are a nuisance as well as a moral moron. Having a good time here? Saved any souls today zombie boy? Good luck with that live for ever in heaven thing. RE: Does Atheism make sense?

"To protect the slaves"....perhaps, and this is just me brainstorming here......god should have given us a mandate along the lines of "thou shalt not own slaves"..rather than a guideline for beatings? I mean, I'm obviously not omniscient, or omnibenevolent...and that jumps right out at me. God's going to be capable of doing a better job at the whole commandments thing than I am, right Corn? Maybe slave owners wrote that, it had nothing to do with god. Is that entirely unreasonable? You wouldn't have to jump through hoops to make it okay.

Nothing makes sense. The universe does not conform to either sense... or your expectations.

I agree, this whole debate is pointless, because you refuse to see that owning another human being as property and forcing them to work against their will is totally wrong and never, ever OK under any circumstances, even if you treat them well. Owning another human being is never right and totally immoral, despite what your precious bible scripture says. And if you're going to keep claiming that it's OK to own another human being because God said it's OK, you're beyond help.

owning another human is wrong? damn...

If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925 Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession.
