Negative reputation?
RE: Negative reputation?
It seems that there is a relatively small number of active posters and we know as a group who is and who is not. I see no reason for a negative rep system. I like the idea of a positive board and it presents us in a good light to the newcomers (before they become chew toys).
You make people miserable and there's nothing they can do about it, just like god.
-- Homer Simpson

God has no place within these walls, just as facts have no place within organized religion.
-- Superintendent Chalmers

Science is like a blabbermouth who ruins a movie by telling you how it ends. There are some things we don't want to know. Important things.
-- Ned Flanders

Once something's been approved by the government, it's no longer immoral.

I think some of you already know my position on this :3

Just a thought. If not negative reputation points, perhaps a separately tracked number of "troll points." (Or, maybe track positive and negative rep both, separately.)

(Voicing such concerns is likely entirely more candidly self-disclosing than is my druthers, but whatever.)

RE: Negative reputation?
Such a system would still be abused. We could have troll points, but what is to stop someone for giving someone troll points just because they disagree with an argument? At least with the positive system, abuse is practically non-existent because you are giving a positive action with any comment you make.

If we are deprived of the utility of either positive or negative reinforcement, our progress towards the ideal communist state will be halved!

(The idea has struck me of organizing to have some relatively uniformly disliked forum member repped by as many people as possible such that excessive rep would be the scarlet letter, but it probably wouldn't work. And if it backfired.....)

Considering the aforementioned reasons for negative rep and troll points, here is my reason against the proposition:

Imagine a negative rep or troll point system in place at AF. Now imagine members who don't break the rules, yet endeavor to accumulate negative rep points. Can you possibly imagine the frequency of bullshit grenades tossed into conversation for the sole purpose of earning negative rep?

I'm not sure that I see this as an argument against the idea.

Another idea I had was whimsy points. They're neither good nor bad, no interpretation is given, and no comment included. You just give them to someone for any reason you feel like.

The troll idea... keep the present system for normal users.
Allow admins/mods to give negative rep Big Grin

That way tib can see who the good and bad mods are! Tongue
(so far, I have absolutely no complaints regarding any mod... it's just something for future reference! Tongue)
