Do you think that any religion would act differenttly if it's religious clearics were in charge of the country (other than maybe a couple of Eastern ones)? In the old testament, if a Kohen finds out that his daughter is not a virgin she is put to death by shoving burning material down her throat until she burns to death from the inside. The Christian Church, however, encouraged prostitution providing that they gave a portion of their earnings to the church (early pimps), but if you look at "Torture through the Ages" (available online) the Church had a lot of fun back in the good old days with disobedient children as well.
