Is it discrimination to ask for one's religion?

Even if we are to accept your premise that all theists are illogical, you are forgetting that people can follow different logic for their religious beliefs than they do for the rest of their life. Desiring a purpose can do that to a person.

My bad. I didn't give enough details.
In 2005, I hired a guy who turned out to be a Muslim extremist. One day I walk in to the conference room and see him prying! I said "WTF are you doing, I have clients here for a meeting" he told me that it's within his rights to pray.
I said "fuck you, I am not paying you to pray on my dime. Do it on your own dime. You are fired"
He threaten to sue me and I told him to kiss my ass and never heard from him again.
The moral of the story is, if you give an inch, they want a foot.
maybe none of you had to deal with this kind of shit and I hope you never do, but that's one of the realities of running a business. Not everyone you choose will be whom you hoped for.
Later I find out that this guy was trying to convert my guys into Islam and fight against the infidels.
No way I am getting in to this shit of a mess. I rather be sued and convicted than to be a part of this kind of bull shit.
I hereby withdraw my post.
Might maybe right, but right is always might.

Shouldn't have fired him for praying. Should have fired him for trying to convert people though. It's not an appropriate workplace discussion. I'm not saying you shouldn't have fired the guy, just do it for good reasons or they are gonna come bite you on the ass.

EDIT: Honestly with your hiring and firing techniques I'm surprised you haven't been sued already. Where do you live?

What a cunt.

You wax poetic about logic, yet refer to a Muslim that prays as an extremist. Can I now conclude that you are a shitty programmer in addition to being a terrible manager?

For a manager, you seem to know very little about labor law, including the idea of reasonable accomodation.

Employers are supposed to make reasonable accommodations for religious beliefs (ie: you can't fire a Jew for refusing to work on Saturdays), though this might only apply to larger employers. Firing someone for praying is setting yourself up for a lawsuit. And asking potential enployees what their religious beliefs are is discriminatory. I hope you have a good lawyer.

Many were surprised by my question and some told me it was none of my business.
Needless to say I hired the ones that told me they were Atheists. My ex-wife suggested (strongly ) that I shouldn't do that in the future and it is considered discrimination. Like I didn't already know or cared.
My reasoning is; If theists can discriminate against me and call me a godless communist with no moral values without even knowing me or what my views are, why can't I do the same thing?
Wanting to be fair and not a fascist, I like to get your intelligent input on this subject. Am I doing anything really wrong here?

With that bolded line, you prove to me you have inferior moral values.

However, it gets worse imho. The thread title asks a question which you acknowledge in that bolded line. So you knew it was descrimination, yet somehow you felt the need to publicly confess what you've done.

I don't think you're capable of perceiving logic and reason... Undecided

You're being a bigot because other people are bigots. If you're what succeeds in your business you should hire only bigots.

You can conclude whatever fancies your big ego.
I built my business with blood, sweat and tears and I hire whomever I fucking please.
And I did say I withdrew my post, didn't I you harping cunt?

I don't think I want to either. It seems this place is full of keyboard cowboys that have nothing better to do but to wait and pounce on someone who posts things they don't like to hear.
I have better things to do than to justify my actions to a bunch of strangers.
No Thanks, But I did learn to keep it to myself and for that I am grateful.
Adios.
