I too worry that we won a battle today but are losing a bigger war. Citizens United + the Voting Rights Act going bye-bye means it's going to be much harder to avert our slide into fascism. Gay rights is nice and all but if we're all being crushed beneath a corporate jackboot, it's going to be a cold comfort to think we're all equal in our enslavement.

152 years ago, conservatives broke from the Union and started a war because the guy they didn't want elected might end their right to own human beings as property.

Today, they only sit around on TheBlaze and Breitbart and, faced with more proof of the doom of their hick-ass ideology, make threats none of them would ever carry out as it would require putting down the Miller Lite for five minutes and leaving the singlewide. I'd say we've added by subtraction.

Only a portion is deemed unConstitutional. They did not rule on Prop 8 to keep gay marriage still illegal in most of the United States.

I think the country has become more fascistic as a whole in the last 40 years and it manifests itself in such subtle ways as the extreme right which wants to shoot border crossers on sight while the center is content to spend billions for a fence. The left, such as it is, is shut out of the debate.

A large part of this is driven by the (correct) observation that the country is changing and angry old white guys find themselves facing a future in which they or their kids will be a minority. We are seeing attempts to cling to power.

Consider as an analogy this scene from 1960's Spartacus. Crassus represents the entrenched upper classes and Caesar represents the "mob" and Mitt Romney told us in no uncertain terms who they are.

They did not strike down the DOMA sections that allow states the freedom to not recognize same-sex laws of other states.

Had they ruled on Prop 8, they likely would have struck down the constitutional basis for states to make homosexual marriage illegal. Such a motion had been expected for weeks. That means them not taking up Prop 8 means the fight might last for years to come unless a new case is brought to the Supreme Court, one which they can't simply dismiss it on legalistic grounds.

And no CleanedShaved, that's not what you half-assedly posted. Had the entirety of DOMA been voted down, all US anti-homosexual laws could be declared invalid by reciprocity.
