To play the devil's advocate here, that's not what it's about.
If a girl simply wasn't dating, nice guys wouldn't care nearly so much. The argument isn't "I'm nice, why won't she have sex with me," it's "I'm nice and he's not, so why is she dating him and not me?"
Sex isn't implied, and the existence of a perceived worse party who the girl *is* dating is what typically causes the angst.
Very different.
What falls away is always, and is near.

Get close without alarming anyone, size up the mark, and use the method you believe will be most effective.
I'd go with the way I found to be 'the best' without risking the competition snapping him up.
