Substance addiction or addiction to anything in general is what people will use to fill the void in their life when don't have their refuge in the Lord, you have their a safe port to set anchor rather than finding yourself tossed around on the turbulent seas of life.
Come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant.

Can you conceive the possibility that "the Lord" is also filling some sort of void?

Bullshit. Addiction is biological and psychological, not the product of superstition. Addiction happens all over the world, and it is a ratio to population and access.

A person who never worshiped god is told that if he seeks out god he will find him and fill that empty space in his heart or soul. A person who worshiped god for years and years and finally realized that there's no one there gets told that he didn't do it right. Shouldn't Christians make sure to tell the former how to properly seek out god, so that they don't seek in vain? God is remarkably good at hiding from people, it seems.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Well Tonus he evidently lives in his own anti-science pocket universe, presumably with a mat at the door that says "We Don't Want Any".

And if one of us protests that we don't have a Jesus-hole in us, you'll scoff and bray at how little we understand, because you're not really interested in having a conversation, you just want to throw down your words like the turgid rubbish they are and walk away, safe in the knowledge that your Jesus-hole has been plugged for yet another day.
Ugh.

Right. You throw yourself completely and utterly into an unfounded, non-evidential religious belief to fill the void in your life because you've been conditioned to believe that there is a void in the first place and that the only thing that could possibly fill that void is the Lord.
First the person convinces you that you're sick, and then they tell you that they can make you all better when there was nothing wrong with you to begin with.

I don't call it a devil, but the need to have that one more score... Still, no gods involved.

Ugh. I love the the mental visual that "your Jesus-hole has been plugged" gives me.
That being aside, the Jesus-hole swill that Christians like to serve is hilarious to me. Reminds me of the "Cure-All" salesmen of yore.

No it's just human nature, without God humans will covet a multitude of gods. Back in the day they may have been literal idols to worship in a temple but these days the gods are stuff and addictions of the modern world. Drugs and alcohol abuse and whatever being peoples gods of choice. However once you come to the knowledge of the one true God that will become the central focus rather than the other stuff. Here we go.
Now that's some good preachin right there.
Quote:the person convinces you that you're sick, and then they tell you that they can make you all better when there was nothing wrong with you to begin with.
The sickness is sin and what you see people get up to with all these various addictions, compulsions, obsessions and all their flaws and failings demonstrate this point as a reality. Don't think this stuff was all "made up" it's human life in reality for real.
So that's the sickness, but here is the cure!
Though I'm sure other religions work as well though they are all based on works not grace given freely. If you're a Muslim you have to do this that and the other for instance.
Come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant.
