I would think that the girls in particular will find Islam hard to resist after this presentation. I'm sure they are all secretly longing to be in a marriage where they are obliged to consent to sex anytime their husbands demand it, irrespective of their feelings. As a Btw I asked my good lady how she would feel about such an arrangement. She said it would work provided I didn't mind her "managing demand" by ripping my testicles off.

I think I'll stick to the Christian model.

Fucking hell. I feel like I no longer need to make a counterargument to any of this "Islam doesn't objectify women" stuff anymore, I can just link to Sleepy's posts on marriage and leave it at that.

The man appears to have no self awareness at all. He must be very surprised whenever he looks down.

I can give up the job I've trained so hard for and start wearing a sack. I can burn all my swimsuits, my shorts and dresses, wifebeaters and everything else. Oh, and I'll have to sell my bike because, I assume, Sleeps is the sort who doesn't want women driving, especially a motorbike with a seat we have to - GASP - wrap our legs around!

And I'll have to give up surfing too, most likely.

There's an opportunity I didn't even dream of before.

On a different note, I work with an American Muslim girl here in Kiwiland, and she's one of the nicest, smartest people I've ever met. She describes herself as a cultural or modern Muslim. She believe in the basic tenets of the religion, prays (but not every day), has an occasional drink and lives just like a regular person you would expect from California. She says she lives by her religion but doesn't believe in any of that "12th century tribal bullshit".

It's just astonishing to see the reaction of muslim women to the comments of muslim men. I forced this exact scenario in my last place of work; I wanted to make my male muslim colleague reiterate his views on the whole '4 wives ruling' and offer justification for it whilst I knew two of my female muslim colleagues were in earshot. Sure enough he unwittingly explained that he is allowed up to 4 wives because the book says so, yadda yadda, and that it was for the woman's benefit because it is such a shame when there are women without husbands and that they have needs etc. When I asked why women aren't allowed for husbands he said because the women couldn't be sure who the father was to potential offspring and that's why it had to be one man per 4 women. I tried explaining the maths to him, by stating that we would soon run out of female candidates for men as the population is not 1:4 men to women but he flat out rejected this (I think he genuinely thought that there were four times as many women to men in every country). By this time my female colleagues had absorbed quite enough and were more than willing to wade in to the conversation and admit that there was no way they would share their husbands with another woman. And there we had one of the most awkward moments i've ever bore witness to, and I bloody relished every second of it. There was some crude justification from that guy, and the two girls were firm with their "no way" stance. I think it's testament to the strength of liberal democracy that the women felt ok getting their objections out like that in the open, knowing that there were employment rights etc that would in theory protect them from anything too sexist being touted in the workplace. What a shame their holy book has it penned for all to see, whether they liked it or not. In most muslim countries I expect the women would sit in silence and take every blow right on the chin. Still, no chance of getting them to see how much their religion treats them like a few coins, ripe for bartering and exploiting at the discretion of the male master.
