I have to come to realize that even though I don't agree with the concept of gay marriage, all citizens deserve equal rights. Why can't the other side recognize what marriage means to others. Civil unions are a compromise that could work and many end the fighting.

I don't understand. You're saying a civil union would be the same exact thing, give the same benefits, and be recognized the by the government same way that marriage is, you just don't want to call it marriage? Even though it is the same exact thing? Doesn't that sound kinda crazy?

I have a carrot. You have a carrot. I don't like that you have a carrot. Call your carrot a fork. I feel better now.

And I'm sorry to inform you but the "institution" of marriage has not been the same since the start of this country. You used to be able to marry 14 year old girls for some wheat and a burlap sack of ducks. And interracial marriage was illegal as well. Shucks! That's what they should have done when those pesky mixed couples wanted to get married. There should have been marriage for people that married within their own race, and civil unions for interracial couples. Because then they would have protected the sacredness of marriage as it was first conceived at the start of this country. But alas, the sacred institution of marriage has been already been soiled by people of different races.

And further, why are you only defining marriage to what it was at the start of the founding of the U.S. anyways? Why is marriage at it's best in 1776 America? Why not 1776 Mongolia? 1524 Europe? 3119 Planet of Leather Fetishes? And why should the formation of a government better define your love?

The theoretical practical difference between marriage and civil union legislation is that civil unions can be terminated at any time.

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

Ok. I'm trying to come up with possibile ways to come together to solve a problem instead of trying to destroy each other in the process. That's why this country (USA) is going to dogs or has gone already. I guess we're not going to sit around the campfire, hold hands and sing "kumbaya".

What? Allow me to recap what has happened.

1. You said xtians think that adam and eve were the first married couple so gays getting married offends you and they shouldn't.
2. We said you telling them not to get married offends them.
3. Now you're saying gay marriage is destroying people and we don't want to sing kumbaya.

Are you high?

And I asked you a question. Why can't you think about gay people's feelings? Why are we all expected to coddle christians' feelings when they aren't even considerate enough to think about others? Religious people are like immature little kids when they say things like this.

No. What I'm saying is we can hold to our opinions, but respect the fact that others hold different opinions. The goal is to come up with a system that gives equal rights to all parties. We'll never convince each other to come over to our sides. Civil unions are a way to give equal benefits to all parties while allowing for different beliefs and opinions. By the way, I'm also not high.

Because, quite simply, the only 'side' whose opinions matter is the side of the people wanting to marry one another. Should you have to ask for the approval of some large group of people whose existences are in no way impacted by your decision to marry your spouse? Should you have to compromise with strangers who wish you couldn't marry the person you want to marry and allow them to dictate that you can't call that a 'marriage'?

No?

Then, why would you ask that of anyone else?

I am not interested in compromising with anybody who doesn't support marriage equality, especially not now, because your side is not going to win.

Why should I respect your opinions? They're selfish and bigoted. Do you respect the opinions of racist people? Do you respect KKK and say well let's not have interracial marriages, we have to respect the racists.

That is exactly what gay marriage is doing, giving equal rights to all parties. Please explain how gay marriage is taking away your rights.

Also, how does gay marriage disallow different beliefs & opinions?
