They believe to be fulfilling what's right. I just watched an interview with several pedestrians (muslims) about the Sharia law and they all agreed indirectly that it must be forced or imposed in the rest of the world. That's the purpose of the quran and sharia

I think you're both misunderstanding his point. He isn't arguing that we should take their customs and laws as our example. His point seems to me to be that if they find that sort of behavior acceptable in their home countries, they are practicing a double-standard when they complain of France doing essentially the same thing: limiting dress by law.

It's a fine distinction, but important.

Who are 'they'?

This complaint was brought by a French national about a French Law, the only 'they' in the discussion is the European Court of Human Rights who effectively established that in the absence of a unified position in the European Council, France could have its way.

It's not a 'distinction' that's 'important', it's just not relevant.

I share your concern about freedom, and laud it.

I only think the niqab ban makes sense because of identification issues. There have been instances of jihadis using facial veils to facilitate their attacks, and I think any businessman has every right to expect that his customers shall willingly expose their faces for security purposes.

Thus, I'm against any ban of burkas / chadores, but definitely support a ban on facial veils, no matter the religious justification of lack thereof.

Also, it's total BS that the burka/niquab etc are religious symbols. They're more an import to other Muslim countries from the Saudi peninsula.

A friend of mine studied war poetry from Sierra Leone as part of her PhD research and had/has many interactions with Muslims there. At the beginning of her research some 8 years ago nobody wore the burka. Today it's much more common place as the influence from more conservative ideologies permeates from the east.

Nobody was considered shamefull for not wearing so called 'Islamic' dress there.

There does seem to be a lot of old bollocks (as we say in Britain) being written in this discussion. Let's see if we can iron a few things out.

1. The original complaint was brought by a French national who resides in France, to my knowledge there are no deserts in France, let alone inhabited ones.

2. Islam is not a race, it's a religion

3. The law in question refers neither to Islam nor to veils, it prohibits the wearing of anything that hides the face, one assumes this will include other articles such as Halloween masks, face-paint, scarves, balaclavas, etc. (It will be interesting watching the French implement this one).

4. Not all Muslims are from the Middle East, in fact, the vast majority are not, and come from countries such as Croatia, Indonesia, India, Russia, China, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Ukraine and many others. Yes, Islam originated in the Middle East and it's main Holy city is in the Middle East but the same is true of Judaism and Christianity, where's the comments about their 'desert shitholes'?

5. On whether or not the niqab, hijab and/or burqa, etc. are obligations under Islamic law, Islamic scholars are undecided on this. Some believe it is an obligation, some believe it is not and it is up to the individual. There is no consensus from within the Islamic world, so any debate on the matter is moot.

6. Many Middle Eastern countries base their laws and social conduct on Islamic doctrine, and that seems to have been commented upon. Western laws and social conduct are based upon Christian doctrine. There are many atheists here levering their opinions of Islam against subsumed Christian principles, and they don't know they are doing it. It does not bode well for atheism that people cannot recognise the relative religious positions they are arguing from.
