I think you'll find that roman catholics generally don't place a lot of emphasis on individual interpretation of scriptures. I think there also tends to be less emphasis on literalism, or maybe it is only a willingness to be led by those less literal than themselves. But I've only been to one catholic wedding so I don't really know. (My wife admires the Catholics for their ability to confess, repent and move on. No endless guilt.)
I just want to know whether he/she believes that Jesus saw Elijah and Moses. And if so, how does he/she reconcile this with the view that there are no actual souls or spirits after death (if I understood correctly).
If not, then I have nothing more to ask in this specific case.
By the way, most Catholics believe in actual spirits and supernatural afterlife. So Purplundy must be one of those really liberal type of Catholic.

-perplundy seems, to me, to be a typical catholic, not necessarily a liberal one - in the balance. Caveat emptor, experiences may vary, etc etc.
(catholicism and liberalism have some common trends - we would expect that to express itself in a persons opinion anyway, wouldn't we?)

Interesting. Did you spend any time as a Catholic growing up? If so, do you agree with my wife about the superior manner in which catholics process shame/guilt .. confess, three hail Maries and you're moving on. If you did start off Catholic, was it hard to move beyond?

How do you know which types are liberal and which types are conservative then? Whats the bar? Alot of experience -with- or -amongst- catholics?

The way I see it, the further away they deviate from the traditional Catholic position, the more liberal they would be.

Don't wee see the majority of catholics moving away from the "traditional position" as expressed by the only authority in the matter Il papa? Hell, then man in the hat is moving away from the traditional position. Perhaps, a bit like american politics, the base is moving away (in one direction) from earlier definitions in such a way as to necessitate a redefining of the terms - as they apply to catholicism?
I give "old school hardliners" massive shit on these forums -in part because- I know that their own fellows cringe when they speak. It's as much a defense of faith as it is an attack on faith.
