"The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us..." should we be grateful?

I'm glad you're thankful. Sadly, those radical minorities base their radical opinions on the same book you worship.

Yes. That is sad. But what exactly are you trying to say?

That the bible should be outlawed because a small percentage of the people who read it come out thinking God wants us to believe gays are vile?
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Lol, this was a response to a post where all you did was say you don't respect me and think I don't deserve respect. How was I supposed to answer more in depth than that?

Just a question for everyone else in the room...

Is the following "a post where all I did was say I don't respect CL and think she doesn't deserve respect"???

Oh and we've had some pretty humble theists. Rayaan, Ryft, Tackatack, Jacob (when he was actually a theist). It's not like we haven't seen a polite person before. There's a difference between being polite and deserving respect and being polite and not deserving respect.

Show of hands plz.

Post 199, here:
http://atheistforums.org/thread-34779-page-20.html

(discussion went a mile a minute, probably got buried)

I feel like I have already explained my position on this at length, and that is why I did not respond.

I don't think it's wrong to challenge someone's beliefs. In fact, I think it's a good thing.

But I do think there is a right and wrong way to go about doing it. That's all I'm saying here.

Making fun of a friend is not the right way to go about it. And neither is constantly being on their butt about it.

Now, that doesn't mean I think making fun of people shouldn't be allowed. It just means I don't think it's a good thing to do. On or off the internet.

This is -also- the explanation that is given in those societies being overrun by radical islam.  That there is a "right and wrong way", conveniently circumscribed -by- those radical authorities and amounting to a prohibition against criticism.  If someone persists in making some claim, or persists in advocating some thing - telling them once may not do the trick.  I'm sure that somebody disagreed with the mullahs at least once.  Hell, there was probably a guy in the SS who stood up and said "Eine minuten bitte" (yes, yes, I know lol).  Sometimes, persistence is required.

If I spent my time at stormfront and other white supremecist websites ridiculing their positions with the aim of getting at least the odd few to step back and take a look at what it is they've signed up to, would you not consider that a good thing? Regardless of whether or not you say you don't think it should be disallowed, you are disincentiving it, you are advocating for the taboo, socially. Potentially turning yourself into a tool. Do you see my concern?

This thread has become a great example.

I hope all the people who accused me of being thin skinned and flying off the handle are reading what Napo is saying to me and how I am responding.

Even Min wrote me a kind PM just telling me hang in there and that I'm doing fine. That's when you know things are getting serious down in here. :-p

I hope this thread gets pinned to the main index, personally. Everyone on AF needs to see this shit.

You are correct, sorry.

Let me try again then:

"How am I supposed to respond to a post that just says I'm not assertive, that these other theists are humble, and that I am polite but don't deserve respect."

I responded with, "I know you don't respect me, and I'm glad there are people here who do."

^Not sure why that was not an acceptable enough response for you.

I have: my brother in law is inexplicably insistent in his views on the gays. Which is a problem, because my mother-in-law is, by the looks of things, about to marry a woman. Doesn't stop him from ruining family events by voicing his views.

The point, such as it is, is that you need to remember that you wouldn't always be able to label that kind of person as a "radical minority," because for the majority of your religion's history they've been the exact opposite. Homophobia was a big part of the crucible which forged your current religion, it's present in the holy books you use... dismissing all of that as being the views of the minority seems glib, in the face of the history of discrimination that your religion possesses, where the views of those signs were echoed exactly.

That would be funny as well. Shy

Because it's just another nothing post where all you're doing is slurping down the dicks of people who you think respect you.
