Oregon Shooting - Guess why?
#51
RE: Oregon Shooting - Guess why?
Asperger's is not necessarily a mental illness, guys. Nor is it necessarily severe disorder. Please be careful how you word things. Some users in this forum might be on the autistic spectrum and function quite well in society.

Also, correlation is not causation (I think some of us may be forgetting that).

Quote:Asperger's syndrome being a confirmed mental illness well document for pathological behavior.

I had to fact-check this, but you are right. I suppose it is the overlap between the autistic spectrum and other mental illnesses that had me confused. That and my experience with my cousin who is autistic and very violent. I know that these disorders can (but do not always) lead to an increased risk of violence.

I thought the inaccuracy of the statement was sufficient indication of sarcasm.

People like to assume that because someone kills several people, they must have been mentally ill. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

It seems like prima facie evidence of derangement to me, acting out in such a manner.

Exactly! you have to be mentally ill to kill several innocent people! I'm pretty sure that's always the case.

It seems counter to normal psychology to me. I'm no specialist, though.

The problem with that is that our health care system is so fucked up that most nuts never get anywhere near a shrink to be diagnosed as mentally "ill."  It's only after the event that you look back at what the guy was saying and doing and realize " that motherfucker be crazy."

That will not likely change unless you implement mandatory screening for mental illness periodically.  For example, before issuing/renewing a driver's license or at age intervals...   That would probably spark an entirely new debate about privacy and the invasion of it or something.
