Never judge a philosophy by its abuse

For starters, there is precious little created by humans that somebody, somewhere has not figured out a way to abuse. So if we judge a philosophy by its abuse we might as well throw everything out the window.   How then do we judge the value of anything?

Perhaps you should judge a philosophy by its recognition of the potential for its own "abuse", and what provision it has made in its own formulation to effectively mitigate the impact of those abuses.

The truth is right? You don't say!

You are right to question that statement. The concept of "truth" is open to interpretation. Are we talking about facts about a situation or about someone's opinion? Facts can be delivered in a way that steers people away from the truth when key facts are left out. The truth about someone's opinion is not right if the opinion is wrong., i.e., if it is based on false information or misguided emotions.

I agree, don't judge a philosophy by its abuse.

And I don't think that if it's misunderstood it means the philosophy itself is bad at all, it usually just means it was badly articulated.

I agree with the philosopher Dan Dennett that when dealing with important subjects from a position of power or education or whatnot, you should think about not only what affect your words will have when explaining your philosophy, but also the effects common misunderstandings of your words will have.

I agree. Stop judging nazis. I have a friend who sympathizes with Hitler and he's a really nice and lovable person.

Religion deals with establishing truth.
On another plant, perhaps. If you redefine religion to not include belief in god, maybe.

This thread is hopeless...

On Rhondazvous' "other plant," it would also be hopless.

Ummm... the Nazi ideology doesn't have to be abused it's already a bunch of racist, homophobic, bigoted shit.

I was referring to philosophies where the concept itself may be sound but it gets twisted.

Basically in a nutshell: Don't judge something by its strawman.

Like the strawman you just made of my point.

EVF why don't you give an example of a philosophy that is unfairly judged because of its abuse, if you haven't already?
