There's more atheists and agnostics down here than people know, in this part of Texas. Even in Spicewood I've met many.
That's awesome! I work in Lakeway and I feel like going crazy how many times a day religion is brought up by the customers. Just yesterday a lady went on a rampage about how her friend was wondering if Nostradamus was right instead of listening to God and following his word. I just sat back and kept quiet.
I get religious talk from customers on occasion. Most of the time they simply want their gas, beer, and/or cigarettes. If they bring up their own faith, I usually gloss over that part of the convo and keep the focus on business at hand. But I don't pretend anything, and if they persist, I give them a polite notice that I don't believe.
Oddly enough, the few occasions its been brought up is because people assume I'm Christian because I'm a decent guy who treats them like people rather than walking wallets. I've heard "I never would have guessed" a few times when I tell them "I'm not a believer."
I sure don't feel pressured. I just see myself, as an out atheist, showing them that I don't need their god to be good. I've found nothing but acceptance here, which I will admit surprised me.
I hate going into Lakeway, not because of the religionists, but because of the goddamned California transplants.
