You people complaining about Facebook do know you can simply unfollow the annoying people, right? That doesn't unfriend them, it just removes them from your timeline.
The other thing is to get better at using it.
Those annoying things people share (like religious crap)? You can block it at the source (click the little V in the upper right of the offending post and select "Hide all from the fuckface who originally wrote/shared this"). Doing it every time you see bullshit will, in short order, eliminate future bullshit. Why? Because your friends typically share from the same sources, and if you block them *poof* the bullshit goes away.
But, more importantly, only friend people you actually know. I have 60+ people on my list. 5 or 6 are from here. I have another 5 or 6 from other assorted internet people I've known for 15-16 years. The bulk (50 or so) are people I know personally. Family, actual true, in the flesh friends, people I actually liked (or didn't hate) in school, etc.
I'm very particular with who I accept friend requests from/to whom I send them to. And that alone cuts down the signal to noise ratio. No assholes, no idiots.
So, my timeline is 99% what I want to see. The rare exception gets dealt with quickly.
