Speaking of weird places, you know what a weird place is.... its the land where the woman's liberation movement was hijacked in order to brainwash all the mothers across the country to start working so the government can tax twice as many workers. Where this movement caused the children to be raised by a state-run watered down education system in the day time, and the television set in the afternoon. Where people are raised into thinking that managing high amounts of debt to go to university for a worthless degree is a normal thing in life. Where getting a loan to purchase a car is normal in life. Where paying high amounts of taxes to run your own business is normal. To pay taxes on your own home is normal. Where borrowing to fund social programs at the expense of robbing successive generation's future is okay....

I can go on and on if you like.

Nobody is claiming the Middle East is now or has ever been just about stoning. The claims of barbarism come from the fact that it happens AT ALL. A cruel and barbaric practice which in my opinion,has no place in a civilised society.

OF COURSE, not even the most conservative lslamic countries,such as say the Kingdom of The Sauds is completely barbaric. (at least not by seventh century standards) However, some do appear to have a few laws and customs which seem a little extreme to western eyes.

Do I care? In the abstract,yes, emotionally, no..I have neither the desire nor the intention of visiting any of the Gulf states. I really could not care less about the laws and customs other counties choose to follow, SO LONG AS as they do not effect me or my country. Should that ever happen, THEN we will have a problem.
