Quickstart guide for new members

Quickstart guide for new members
This is a guide to help new members get a feel for the place. I keep a link to it in my signature. These are some tips to get you started. This is in no way meant to replace the other guides and help sections already on the forum, nor the forum rules which you should read in full.

I've split it into sections for ease of reading. If you find any mistakes, or have any suggestions, please send me a message.

1) Helpful topic buttons

2) Full/mobile versions

3) Kudos

4) Reputation

5) Types of members

6) Ignore list

7) Newbie link rule

8) Editing posts

9) Posting videos and pictures

10) Other useful code

RE: Quickstart guide for new members
I have now finished this quickstart guide!

It is based on the unofficial guide I had a link to before in my signature. I have updated and improved it, and now the link brings you here instead. I hope it will be useful for new members, and can be a reference material for older ones.

Hm, I was using "spoiler" tags rather than "hide". They seem to do the same thing then! In the videos portion you might want to explain how the "YouTube" tags work. Also mention that forum code is called BCC code and perhaps give a further reading link for those who want the full list of compatible tags.

Anyway, good guide.

You're correct, spoiler and hide do exactly the same thing.

Reptilian: Thanks very much for the feedback! I'll see if I can work that in.

You're right, spoiler tags are pretty much the same. If you're going to nest them, you should alternate.

As for YouTube tags, you don't need them. I never used them. Are you trying to do something specific with the videos? The forum automatically turns the direct link into a video.

Nicely done Rob. If it hasn't already been stickied, I think it should be Smile

Thanks very much Smile

Yup, it's stickied in the intro section, so hopefully new members might peruse (!!) it when they go to make their thread.

I incorporated all this into point 10 now, except the YouTube bit.

You're correct, spoiler and hide do exactly the same thing.

However, the spoiler tags are sometimes not compatible with mobile devices.
