What is your Favorite Religious Contradiction?

Hmm...if I gave it a bit of thought, I'd have to say that my favourite religous contradiction is The Bible. Yup.

I totally understand. The entire chapter 20 of Leviticus tells us to kill so many people, even disobedient children. Which definitely goes against the Ten Commandments.

The scriptures do not call for the killing of children, not in the way your thinking.

I believe most Christians vastly fall short of the standard of living that is required of a servant of Jesus.

At the very least, many western Christians still find it appropriate to have a big house, nice car, etc etc etc, when rather they're calling is to a simple life of worship of God. Too many Christians feel that it's ok to twist the words of the bible to suit their desires. I usually wouldn't care, but if everyone is twisting the words to mean different things and different standards then the bible is rendered useless by the vast amount of rubbish interpretations out there.

Your right, most christians do not live lives as servants for Christ, I'm guilty of that myself, I do know people who have great wealth that are true servants and I believe that God has blessed them with this wealth because they use it to serve Christ. God welcomes the poor and rich into the church, in his eyes they are equal. He leads them to serve as their abilities allow.

My fave contradiciton must be children. I vaguely remember something about Jesus saying how innocent the young are and how they are the only ones who can get to heaven without even trying. And then there is FSTDT and the quotes of cuckoos who claim that children are anything short of the Devil himself and e.g. spanking and mental torture is the way to rid these hellridden, sinbound creatures of evil. Go figure..

I have way to many contradictions in the Bible, it would take me forever.
However, one of my tops is one of the first stories: Adam and Eve.

Genesis 1:11-12 and 1:26-27 Trees came before Adam.
Genesis 2:4-9 Trees came after Adam.

Genesis 1:20-21 and 26-27 Birds were created before Adam.
Genesis 2:7 and 2:19 Birds were created after Adam.

Genesis 1:24-27 Animals were created before Adam.
Genesis 2:7 and 2:19 Animals were created after Adam.

Genesis 1:26-27 Adam and Eve were created at the same time.
Genesis 2:7 and 2:21-22 Adam was created first, woman sometime later.

Great choice of contradictions Taylor! I too have so many I could write a book on the subject but I will just mention one right now for example what were the last words of Christ as he died on the cross?
1.And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'But Jesus, again crying out in a loud voice, yielded up his spirit. Matthew 27:46,50
2.But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. Mark 15:37
3.Jesus cried out in a loud voice saying, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.' With these words he breathed his last. Luke 23:46
4.After Jesus had taken the wine he said, 'It is fulfilled'; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit. John 19:30

Did Jesus carry his own cross or was he assisted?
1. On their way out, they came across a man from Cyrene, called Simon, and enlisted him to carry his cross. Matthew 27:32
2. They enlisted a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross. Mark 15:21
3. As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus. Luke 23:26
4. So at that Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. They then took charge of Jesus,and carrying his own cross he went out to the Place of the Skull or, as it is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, John 19:16,17

As you can see all of the synoptic gospels agree that Jesus did not carry his own cross, but John states that he did. It is interesting that in most movie depictions of Jesus crucifixion they almost always show him bearing his own cross or being assisted part ways. But according to the above mentioned scriptures he did not carry his cross at all Simon of Cyrene did. If you read the crucifixion and resurrection stories in all four gospels you will have enough contradictions to shake a stick at.

There is a promise in Matthew 18:19 and at least 11 other places that prayers will be answered. They are not - that is obvious and has been demonstrated by many studies, such as this one.

Also, the fundamental contradiction of a just, loving being who condemns us to hell simply for not believing in him.

Yeah, I'd have to agree that the bible itself is one huge contradiction. But it's fun to see the apologists try to explain how there aren't any contradictions in it.
