So we've seen Daesh publicly butcher anyone in their territory who doesn't agree with them, destroy art, commit torture etc.
Personally I'm struck by the similarities to the actions of the Puritans during the Interregnum.
Since the restoration Christianity has never really been on the same footing in Britain, could the same happen to Islam?

They can discredit the religion in the eyes of it's primary congregation.
Public feeling in the ME could (should?) turn against what Daesh seeks as a direct reaction to it's barbarism.
For a moment the people had freedom after the Arabian Dawn, Daesh stole that. I suspect Daesh probably rates as the biggest threat Islam has ever faced.

Darwin had more to do with killing christianity in England than puritans during the inter-regnum.

By Victorian England the position of most demoninations was that he was both the watchmaker who made the universe and the regulator in the system keeping it ticking. That's one of the reasons why On The Origin Of Species tackles Paley's watchmaker argument first. After Darwin it was possible to think of the universe having no gaps in which god could exist.

Christianity was already down by the time Darwin arrived. Plenty of vicars complained about their lack of congregation and value of their collection plates during the Victorian period.
Whether that was due to having a day off on Saturdays or any number of other reasons such as women learning to read depended on the vicar in question.

I don;t know why people think that religiously motivated barbarism is going to turn people away from the religion.  All of the abrahamic faiths have engaged in barbarism, they grew -while- they did it, and continue to grow today.  Sometimes -because- of their barbarism, directly and indirectly. If holding a knife to youtr throat won;t compel you to their religious beliefs...something that might is the shittiness in the world around you due to their being nutballs holding knives to peoples throats. Religious institutions and groups have run the gamut of affrontery from inciting war, all the way "down"top being caught with their hands (and much, much more) in childrens pants....and it doesn't seem to make people fall away. We just don't work like that, as much as we might like to or think we should.  This will be rationalized and disassociated just as the religious have always done with their religions litany of offense, and that's assuming it isn't lionized or sanctified, which is just as likely..if not even slightly more so.

These people are already heroes to some, and with time they'll be heroes to many more, just as christian missionaries and crusaders are and have been despite the horrific shit they pulled. If they were catholics, they might get canonized ffs.
