How did you come to terms with Death?

Only that you relive that feeling over and over again. I fine it funny that you can come to grips with being nothing for a eternity and not being with God for eternity. Who would really trade the latter for the first?

Have you ever heard of the idea that being dead is just like before you were born? No big deal.

Honestly, the fact that the afterlife is such an important issue for theists shows the true nature of their beliefs. You simply cannot handle the fact that death is the end so you invent a magical place of eternal happiness. Quit wasting your life planning for the next life and enjoy the ONLY one you have.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

That is a big issue, whether living a seeming sort of life and feeling it is quality because of an extrinsic quantity is as good as living a seeing sort of life and questioning its quality by measurement of its quantities. The old adage that you can't make chicken soup out of chicken shit seems to fit.

As a person who believes in a afterlife I can't seem to wrap my head around this idea. Maybe some atheist here can enlighten me on the subject?

I don't know that death is truly the end of everything. The Cosmos is a weird place and who knows what's going on. All I know is that I am conscious and aware now and from my own personal perspective I always will be.

Heaven is the place where you look down and see some of your friends and relatives suffering eternal torment for some sin or other and you just don't care, because you are safe in Heaven.

Lovely thought, very Xtian.

And, what with the laws of thermodynamics, maybe there is some weird cellular dust continuum, LOL.

Yes...and it is as stupid as every other human rumination about heaven....or hell, for that matter.

If you've ever been under general anesthetic, been unconscious or even in a dreamless sleep; you understand that oblivion is no big deal. Being dead is not scary in the least. Dying itself is not something anybody relishes, but it's just part of the life cycle, you have to accept you will die. It's not pleasant, but then it's not really pleasant for believers either.

The thought of leaving loved ones behind, plans unfinished and the tremendous waste that is death, is of course the worst aspect of it, but, I should never hope to live to a time where I didn't have loved ones to leave behind, or plans to finish. I think if you arrive at a point in your life where you can think, "I'm done", it'd be a terrible shame.

You see knowing that I only have one life, and that the only way I can transcend death is what I do in the here and now that will live on in peoples memories, gives tremendous purpose to my life. Much more so than living under the watchful eye of an unattainable, judgmental big brother in the sky.

This is a great relief. Embrace it and stop wasting your life!

"Great spirits have often encountered violent opposition from weak minds."
Einstein

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down happy. They told me I didn't understand the assignment. I told them they didn't understand life.

That was pretty deep. Don't know how to respond.

I deal with death rationally. It happens, when it does I won't exist in any way, and I won't know, nevermind. I take strength from my grandad, he had terminal cancer and refused treatment to extend his life, he knew his time had come and understood that.

My missus once said to me, 'your mum is watching over you' i rolled my eyes and just said, don't delude yourself dear, she's a pile of ashes, accept it and get on. Even when we had a stillborn I still thought the same, I don't need to delude myself to make myself feel better. Death is sad, but it's a guarantee so crack on and make the most of life.
