The old testament is the whole story of why the sacrifice of Jesus in the new testament was necessary  It all points to Jesus, the messiah.  Without the old testament there would be no meaning to the new testament.

Given that there are still religious jews in the world, I'd say it's still debatable whether Jesus was the messiah or not.
