How religious or nonreligious is your family?
|
My parents were funditard evangelical holy roller nutjobs. My Father's parents were average old Presbyterian - you went to church on Sunday 'cause everybody did, but you didn't talk about it outside of church. My Mother, however, was raised dirt-poor in Tennessee and clung to her church as the thing that made her BETTER than everybody else. She got married and just got worse. The cousins that I have in Tennessee are the most rabid fundagelical creationist literalist assholes imaginable. They think Trump is going to usher in the Second Coming.
Most of my cousins on my Father's side, as well as my brother and me, we're all atheists now.

Da was what is known in NI as a 'social Catholic'. He attended services and would volunteer for fetes and 'dos', mainly because it was expected of him. In actuality, he was a pretty enlightened agnostic. I know for a fact that he turned down offers to teach catechism and Sunday school, and - as far as I know - never gave money directly to the Church, but would take part in fundraisers for specific causes. He liked to refer to himself as a '...cliff-hanging Catholic. We don't believe in God, but we do believe that Mary was his mother.'
Mum was devout, but not fussed or particularly wonky over it. She didn't think much of John Paul II. I have one sister who is fairly militant regarding her atheism. My five brothers are Catholics in varying degrees of delusion. One of my uncles (long since dead) was a Franciscan deacon who taught agronomy at Trinity. My wife is culturally Jewish and an atheist. Her brother is a reform rabbi. Both of our cats are Initiates of the Order of Napping All Fucking Day So They Can Be Well Enough Rested To Walk On My Face At Night Wanting To Be Fed. They are extremely devout. Boru

My parents were never church-goers but nominally CofE.
Me and my elder sister were baptised as this was apparently mandatory to attend the local Catholic school which was selected due to it's academic record. As told a few times on previous threads I came to the conclusion the Nuns were talking out of their backsides by the age of 7. My dad apparently dropped his belief in christianity during one of my cousin's baptism as the priest spent the entire time moaning about his pension, since then he seems to have gone in for some form of new-ageism. My mum never used to refer to anything of a religious nature though in recent years there have been a couple of odd phrases creeping in which I think she picked up from her mother who was religious. My elder sister did go through a phase of church-going during her teenage years mostly due to the influence of her friends who were daughters of an American pastor who'd come over to preach. As far as I know my youngest sister never attended church for anything other than funerals. My fiancee is rather more anti-theist than myself though I suspect that has to do with being dragged to church into her teenage years by her mother. My step daughter has been brought up atheist though recently began attending a group run by Mormons for recruiting, this has become something of a bone of contention... My son is 2 and can tell me when his nappy needs changing. Quote:I don't understand why you'd come to a discussion forum, and then proceed to reap from visibility any voice that disagrees with you. I haven't really spoken to them about religion that much so I am not entirely sure if they actually believe in it all, it's probably a 'in name only' thing.

It really depends on which part of the family you're talking about. Growing up we never went to church, but I was always raised to believe in God and with a general idea what God wanted from me. Mom used to watch the Oral Roberts show regularly. That stopped when he sent her a small package of wheat or something, with a letter saying to pray over it and tell God your needs, then send it back with a check and he would personally pray over it to see that you got what you needed. She knew a scam when she saw it back then.
Then when I was about 14 they returned to their old Pentecostal church for some reason. I think we moved back into town, so it was less of a chore to get there, especially in the winter. For at least much of the time before that we lived at least a few miles from the town where the church was located. I guess that's the first house in town I can remember living in. I do remember being about 12 and living in the country. Childhood is a blur to me, though. My whole life, really. I only realized a few years ago that most people have vivid memories of their past. I never have. It's all random flashes for me, almost like I'm remembering a story someone else told me. Kind of sucks, now that I know it's not normal. I joined the church for a few years, as did many of my siblings, nieces and nephews at various points. Both sisters, at least 1 of 5 brothers, most of their kids and 1 of my 4 kids attended services at some point. I was already an atheist by the time my kid went, and that was to make mom happy. It stopped real fucking quick when he came home crying because we were going to Hell because we didn't go to church. Never again. He was about 6 at the time, so about 13 years ago. We still let our kids attend services whenever/wherever they want. This has happened with both daughters as they attended to appease friends. We talk openly about being atheist and even most of the kids make fun of magical/religious thinking. Just the youngest, just turned 11, still attends a service once a week with her best friend. The service seems to be "fun for kids" more than indoctrination. Either way, it's her choice. I'm not going to stop her from attending, but neither am I going to dance around her delicate feelings and pretend magical thinking isn't stupid. Not that I have had to. Currently only my mom attends church, that I know of. I did have a brother whose wife was Jehovah's Witness for a while. And I do have one nephew who's crazy (literally) religious. We're talking real end of days shit on his Facebook posts. Dogs and cats living together and all that. It's a long story, but he was dating a crazy bitch (again, literally), moved to a different state with her because we didn't respect her enough to make her stop cutting herself all alone in the room she painted blood red, broke up with her and started going to some freaky church which appears to be similar to Westboro Baptist. He and mom are the only two religious ones I know of now (dad passed more than a decade ago). Mom is very religious, but non-confrontational. She's easy going and loving. She doesn't push her beliefs, she doesn't argue, she didn't push for me to get married in the church, the first morning, when I was still living with the parents, when my then-girlfriend, now wife came down the stairs with me from my bedroom she cheerfully said "Hi" to me and just pretended my girlfriend didn't exist for half an hour. After about half an hour it was "best mother-in-law-to-be ever", like usual. The only time she even mentioned it was when she told me that pastor told her to kick me out of the house and she responded that it was none of her business. Best mom ever too. But to read their Facebook posts, that's a WHOLE different story! According to Facebook they're all the most religious dumbfucks on the face of the planet. Even my sisters, who are both generally pretty intelligent, become knuckle-draggers on Facebook. Mostly, I think, because they're stupid enough to get their news from Facebook, which is more bullshit than Fox News. At least Fox tries to pretend to it can withstand a fact-checking. They're currently all pissed off over how Muslim Obama is and how he wants to tear down America or some stupid shit. I mean, come on. The guy did try to get health care for the poor, so he's obviously a pure evil people-hater. It's funny how pretty much all fake news targets the right. It's almost as if the left is somehow, maybe, too smart to fall for it, generally speaking. But that's not really religion related...well, this time of year it often is, what with the war on Christmas raging on and all. Which, by the way, I just found out we lost! Fucking Starbucks caved on the cups! I KNEW that was going to fuck us! So...I guess that means the war on Christmas is over and we won't hear Bill O'Fuckface talking about it next year at all. That will be nice.
Have you ever noticed all the drug commercials on TV lately? Why is it the side effects never include penile enlargement or super powers?
Side effects may include super powers or enlarged penis which may become permanent with continued use. Stop taking Killatol immediately and consult your doctor if you experience penis enlargement of more than 3 inches, laser vision, superhuman strength, invulnerability, the ability to explode heads with your mind or time travel. Killatoll is not for everyone, especially those who already have convertibles or vehicles of ridiculous size to supplement penis size. It sounds like my early memory, I fell off a ledge when I was a kid and everything before that is a jumbled blur. My grandparents are barely religious at all. My grandfather is certainly a deist. He says he absolutely believes that something created the universe but certainly does not believe any of the stories in the Bible or anything like that. He is very much a logical thinker and accepts things like evolution and adaptation because he thinks they make sense, though I'm not sure how much he's really looked into Darwin's Theory of Evolution to be honest. My grandmother identifies as a Protestant but after many conversations with her on the topic I've realized she is actually just a deist like my grandfather and also does not believe any of the stories in the bible or that Jesus even existed.
My parents are both religious... my dad considers himself a Christian, even though he lives by none of the supposed "Christian values." To be clear I'm speaking of the values which Christians themselves will claim represent what a true Christian is supposed to be. My dad drinks - a lot. Smokes a pack of cigarettes a day, swears, is racist as all hell and never goes to church. So yea pretty much like a shit load of other Christians in America. He lives nothing like how a Christian is supposed to live but if you bring up religion he starts reciting all this shit he probably heard on the 700 Club or something. My mom is the same way she doesn't go to church and while she doesn't drink or anything like that you would never know she was a Christian unless you brought it up to her. My brothers are both weak theists... they believe in god and jesus and stuff but don't really attend church or anything. My grandparents find it interesting that I'm a Satanist and my parents find it horrifying, which is hilarious to me. My brothers think I'm crazy for reasons beside my choice in being a Satanist though I'm sure that doesn't help. I'm actually pretty sure that both of my older brothers are like scared of me which is funny. I actually got my grandma saying "Hail Satan!" before which was hysterical edit: Beyond that I'm not sure at all about my extended family as I've never really brought the topic up with them. For the most part though, I suppose my family could be considered mildly religious.
“Love is the only bow on Life’s dark cloud. It is the morning and the evening star. It shines upon the babe, and sheds its radiance on the quiet tomb. It is the mother of art, inspirer of poet, patriot and philosopher.
It is the air and light of every heart – builder of every home, kindler of every fire on every hearth. It was the first to dream of immortality. It fills the world with melody – for music is the voice of love. Love is the magician, the enchanter, that changes worthless things to Joy, and makes royal kings and queens of common clay. It is the perfume of that wondrous flower, the heart, and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon, we are less than beasts; but with it, earth is heaven, and we are gods.” - Robert. G. Ingersoll |
