One of my high-school/college buddies served in Iraq.  He was, literally, one of the guys going door-to-door searching for combatants.  An incredibly dangerous job, one which, thankfully, he made it back from fully intact.  He was an atheist when I met him and is an atheist now.

That saying is as laughable as it is insulting.  No, atheists aren't 'faking it'.  No, atheists don't lack conviction.  No, you are not somehow superior to atheists because you believe in an imaginary friend.  Get the fuck out of here with that weak shit, and get over yourself.

No, I think that kind of behaviour would cause cognitive dissonance by people pretending to believe in something that they know they do not believe.  The resulting mental contradiction and inner distrust would IMO impair reaction time and judgement, resulting in sub-optimal performance in the field.
