One of my high-school/college buddies served in Iraq. He was, literally, one of the guys going door-to-door searching for combatants. An incredibly dangerous job, one which, thankfully, he made it back from fully intact. He was an atheist when I met him and is an atheist now.
That saying is as laughable as it is insulting. No, atheists aren't 'faking it'. No, atheists don't lack conviction. No, you are not somehow superior to atheists because you believe in an imaginary friend. Get the fuck out of here with that weak shit, and get over yourself.
The shitheads tell themselves that so they feel superior for being shitheads.

Well, that lends authority to your opinion.

Let me put it another way- atheists can be great soldiers, but maybe they'd be even greater if they'd let God watch their backs?

PoorOldSpike...
I'd've guessed Leeroy Jenkins, myself.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Ain't you just the virtual bad-ass. Why don't you hold a buy-bull in front of your face a let someone fire a real AR15 at it, then get back to us.
Computer war gaming... I'll bet virtual pussy is the best you've managed as well.

No, I think that kind of behaviour would cause cognitive dissonance by people pretending to believe in something that they know they do not believe. The resulting mental contradiction and inner distrust would IMO impair reaction time and judgement, resulting in sub-optimal performance in the field.

I couldn't help but notice that there wasn't a big turnout for the fucking chaplain there. I wonder where the holy joe was when the fighting was going on?

I know what it means and it's still wrong

A soldier would be better served digging his foxhole deeper than wasting his time murmuring to some non-existent deity.
I wonder how many of them were praying while the Germans were busy shooting?
