Battlefield Earth is actually a pretty good book. If you like long stories and can stand a basic level of prose, that is. He was a complete loon by the time he wrote it, and it's scientology through and through. It's almost as if BE is the book he was trying to write when he came up with the religion. It's a bet I'd put money on if we could resurrect his lucid self and have him read it, and then opine.

I actually did read Battlefield Earth back before I realized who the author was. I was into reading bigger books back then than I am now.

I put it into the same class of entertainment as cult sitcoms. The writing may not be breathtaking, but it's more than made up for in the length and depth of storytelling. They may take commitment, and it;s probably best to get introduced as a YA, but the payout is satisfying.

Terry Pratchett. His Discworld stories are a total crack up.
If you like older sci-fi, try Asimov or Heinlein. Ted Sturgeon writes some strange stuff, which is pretty entertaining.
For harder sci-fi (more tech) probably can't beat Greg Benford.
Literally came here with Zelazny in mind. His short stories are amazing too. Asimov's a no-brainer too. Good stuff.

You know I just remembered I watched in the '90s an interesting documentary on SF literature trough 20th century and they actually managed to drag a lot of SF authors in it.
Nevertheless I found it on youtube and the quality is not so great (it looks like it was taped in the 90s) and has some subs, but still its a fun introduction into SF literature
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

You know I would actually recommend SF novel that is most science fictiony book ever, meaning that it has all the elements of SF that reader expects: time travel, space ships, future, past, nuclear war, post apocalypse, alternative history, human de-evolution, Dyson sphere, real historical scientists, aliens and it's written in a very approachable style that reads very easily.
That novel is "Time Ships" by Stephen Baxter and although it is a sequel to HG Wells classic it can stand very well on it's own.
