I'm curious to know which Democrat-sponsored policies you think specifically resulted in these jobs losses. Much of it appears to be the result of automation, on the one hand, and changing markets on the other. It seems odd that angry, out-of-work voters would throw in with the party that most fully embraces capitalism in all its destructive/creative glory. True, Trump sold economic nationalism, but it strikes me as naïve to think that the party he temporarily leads would abandon a cornerstone of their economic worldview just to accommodate him.
I didn't say anything about democrat policies here. I just said that those once loyal blue collar workers in the Rust Belt and Coal States who hadn't voted for a Republican presidential candidate in 30 years figured they had enough of the Dems and broke for Trump. Why do you suppose that was?

Conning people into voting against their own self interests is what the GOP has been doing since Reagan. This has nothing to do with Dems ideas AS VOTERS.

When you look at the balance of power as an AVERAGE since Reagan with ALL THREE branches, the GOP has dominated our government. The only thing our politicians can be accused of is being  held hostage by the GOP in that time. As voters, unfortunately, we gave up after Reagan successfully busted the air traffic control unions. Our SCOTUS over that period of time has sided 99% of the time with big corporations.

We value AS VOTERS the right thing. We value livable wages. We value higher education that does not bankrupt those seeking it. We value affordable health care. We value workers having a seat at the table. The GOP has gerrymandered the voting districts nationwide too in that time.

THE GOP is responsible for our exploding pay gap in that time.

You look at the amount of taxes in 1948 and the explosion of unions after WW2, vs the slow decline Reagan started, it is clear that trickle down is bullshit.

Dems as voters have only failed in one respect, we don't partake enough in local and midterm elections, that in turn does not give our politicians a long enough time to make things work. But I do see that changing.

I do hope 45 keeps shooting his mouth off. I think he will destroy the GOP and I hope he does. If the GOP expects to survive long term, it better start being honest and stop being corporate whores.

45 is even too damned stupid to know his words can hurt the stock market, and the past two days, are not the first time that idiot has said stupid crap that could potentially tank the economy.

The only thing you are saying here is voters can and do vote against their own self interests.

The EU commission president threatened to impose retaliatory tariffs on US imports on things like Harley Davidson, Berman, and Levi's jeans. President Trump responded with a tariff threat of his own...

Quote:If the EU wants to further their already massive tariffs and barriers on U.S. companies doing business there, we will simply apply a Tax on their Cars which freely pour into the U.S. They make it impossible for our cars (and more) to sell there. Big trade imbalance!

Let's just hope that we, as a country, can survive this mess before it's too late. This is what happens when a person lacks experience in government. He's a shitty businessman as evidenced by his horrible business record. Given that, he should not be in politics either. He never listens to his advisers and there is often discord within the WH.

When one looks at how many people have quit or been fired from his administration, one has to wonder why he is still in the WH and when is congress going to wake up and get him out of office.

I said that historically it hasn't panned out well for the U.S.. That doesn't mean it wouldn't pan out now. Could be that this move might bring our trading partners back to the table to renegotiate our trade agreements with them if they figure a trade war with the U.S. isn't in their best interest. There were more things going on in Hoover's time around the world that's not going on now. Most nations then were still suffering from the economic devastation of WWI and they were raising their own import tariffs to help relieve their economies, but hurting us. Circumstances are different now. We'll see.

I honestly don't see anything happening this time, that history hasn't already dictated will happen. Same ol', same ol'. Remember that saying "If you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you've always got."

This "tariff war" isn't any different from the ones past presidents have attempted to initiate. But, you're right - we will see.

No, this time we have a dangerous bombastic jackass who doesn't know that he cant use Jerry Springer language. Of course every president has dealt with trade issues, but 45 has no damned clue how to be a diplomat.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world...11026.html

Quote:The European Union has slapped tariffs on some $3.2bn(£2.4bn) worth of US goods, in retaliation for tariffs the Trump administration imposed on imported steel and aluminium earlier this month.

The EU announced a 25 per cent tariff on American products such as whiskey, tobacco, Harley Davidson motorcycles and peanut butter on Friday. They leveraged another 50 per cent tax on select items such as footwear, some types of clothing, and washing machines, according to the BBC.

The tariffs come weeks after the Trump administration implemented a 25 per cent tariff on steel and 10 per cent tariff on aluminium, affecting trade partners like Canada, Mexico, and the EU. Donald Trump threatened additional taxes on European cars if the EU chose to retaliate.

And who couldn't see this coming? Oh that's right, it's Trump, our supposed "leader."

He's operating under the cocksure knowledge that they need us more than we need them.

I do not think they would agree with that assumption.

It's tough to keep score here - how many of our best trading partners are we now currently engaged in a trade war of our making?

Seriously, the man inherits an economy that was cruising along just fine and then he's gotta shove his junk into the machinery.
