Why do theist often drop the letter s when referring to atheists?

Why do theist often drop the letter s when referring to atheists?
This has bugged me for a long time and when I've asked theists they deny knowing that they are doing it. Yet they never say theist instead of theists.

Atheist is a noun. Like most nouns you put an s at the end to signify plural. Are they accusing atheists of having a hive mind?

So please can someone explain why they do it?

(And yes I know I did the same when referring to theists in the title. It was deliberate.)

I've honestly not noticed this little theistic quirk.

Gee, I am so so happy to hear that I am safe in that matter.
I usually put the s.

Just trying to understand why some do it. The fact that many don't even realise they are doing it, like GC, makes it even more confusing.

I've wondered this also, since I've seen it across multiple message boards.

One theist I asked said her phone autocorrected from atheists to atheist.

Never noticed that
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I think that's just because many English speaking theists have poor English. A lot of them also spell it as "athiest". To which I respond "I don't disbelieve in the existence of thighs."

I've never noticed that, but then again, I usually have re-read my own posts more then once to catch spelling and grammar errors, because my brain has its own "autocorrect" and reads words as they are meant to be spelled not as they necessarily are.

Oh... and I never spell atheist right, the computer just always auto-corrects it.
