Are you saying that those are not good arguments to re-define marriage again.   It seemed to work before!  It's like you are saying that I should sit in the back of the bus or something.

You've convinced me. I've been proven wrong and hereby retract post #394.

Well, either those arguments are either valid or they are not.  If not, then perhaps they are just a smoke screen for something else.  They sound good, but they are unsound, and not really what it's about anyway.  However if sound, then shouldn't we be fighting for the rights of the single person to be married (or  a person and their toaster if that's their preference)?

RR seems to be arguing that gays have never been denied the right to get married. That they've always had the right to marry as long as it was to someone of the opposite sex. Which is kinda like a clerk in a clothing store telling you that you can buy any shirt in the store. Except for that one. Yeah, the one you really like and actually want to wear.

Hey, RR... you can worship God if you want. Just not THAT god. So by banning Christianity we're not stopping you from worshiping God. Just that specific god. Cool, right? You're free to worship Odin, Zeus, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or any number of pagan gods. Jesus though, is unacceptable. I mean we're not discriminating against you. You can worship God. Just not THAT god.

That's your logic in a nutshell right there.

Sorry, but there is no slippery slope to be found with letting gays to marry.

Marriage, at least in the US, is a legal contract. Can a toaster consent to enter into a legal contract?

Why shouldn't 2 consenting adults of the same sex be allowed to enter into a legal contract with each other?

The legal contract portion of marriage is completely separate from the religious ritual of marriage.

Only the legal contract portion is necessary to get married in the US. The religious ritual is completely optional.

If churches, temples or mosques do not want to marry people of the same sex, I completely support their decision.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

I don't believe that I have gotten to anything like that yet.  I've just been arguing for equal rights for single people.

Why can't we just re-define things to include the toaster (or not.... it's really based on preference)?

I didn't realize a toaster could give legal consent.

Oh, right. I shouldn't be surprised you think your toaster can do that. After all, your toaster is smarter than you.

If I had a toaster, I bet it wouldn’t make ad hominem attacks. Besides, anything that causes an issue, we can redefine.

First you'll have to invent a sentient toaster that's legally recognized as a person, and capable of giving or withholding consent.  Don't want to get a rap sheet that says "Statutory rape of household appliance," do you?   Tongue
