The death penalty makes no sense.

Did what?

Yes based on good behavior thus the possibility they have changed

Quote:Thar's not punishment. It's an extended holiday!
Yes it is because prison is a punishment

Quote:Where does it end, though?

"50 years is inhumane!"

"40 years is inhumane!"
Could be depending on how old the prisoner is to how long they have left .

This will be my last response in this thread since all we're doing is going in circles. Serioysly, it's like debating a creationist.

First let me state that if you think 8 years is worthy punishment for deliberately taking a life then you're either trolling me or you have a seriously screwed up sense of justice.

Now, we will never agree on this and arguing it back and forth isn't getting us anywhere.

I've stated I think some crimes are worthy of the death penalty of there's absolutely no doubt. You disagree.

I've stated that life in prisonment without the possibility of release is a worthy alternative to the death penalty for other circumstances. You disagree.

You've stated that life in prison is tantamount to torture. I disagree.

You've stated that even the most vile of criminals should some day be released. I disagree.

As the saying goes, opinions are like arseholes. And I frankly don't give a fuck if people agree with me or not.

I'm pretty liberal on most things. This isn't one of them.

This is getting neither of us anywhere so I think it's time we quit (or at least I did).

Also, it's Friday afternoon and I have FAR better things to be doing with my time.

Lastly, don't go seeing this as a retreat, a victory, or an admission of defeat. This is simply a "I can't be fucked anymore".

Toodles!

That's strange i find this very productive and interesting. But if your not enjoying it then you should not continue .

I do think it's a punishment any jail time is a punishment it's what jail is . And yes i think if a person has shown a willingness to change they should be given a chance.I consider that just .

No we won't agree but i feel this was productive in giving our respective position that does not require agreement .I enjoyed this .

Yup

If they are rehabilitated and show a willingness to change .Though i will admit what to do with those that show neither is an open question

I don't remember saying otherwise

Plenty of Conservatives reject the death penalty

I refer to my earlier statements but i understand

This implies this was a contest rather then a candid discussion between friends . I'm very sorry if it came off that way .

And what if he's released and there are?

What are you going to say to the families of the victims?

"Ooops! Sorry?"

Anyone who is such a danger to society is unlikely ever to be released, and should never be.

It is the purpose of justice.

You guys are making a slippery slope fallacy.

I disagree. The purpose of Justice has absolutely nothing to do with what happens to the perpetrator. It has everything to do with reducing the likelihood of crime. What happens to the perpetrator is but an incidental means to the end.

P.S. I wish that Japan would abolish its death penalty; the way it is carried out there is heartless.

Oddly enough, I google "nazi mass murder Norway" and it's the very first hit.

Low Recidivism Rate Reported For Paroled NY Murderers

Quote:Of 368 convicted murderers granted parole in New York between 1999 and 2003, six, or 1.6 percent, were returned to prison within three years for a new felony conviction – none of them a violent offense, says a state Parole Board study reported by the Journal News in White Plains, N.Y....“Individuals who are released on parole after serving sentences for murder consistently have the lowest recidivism rate of any offenders,” said John Caher, a spokesman for the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. A 2002 study by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics tracking 272,000 inmates released in New York and 14 other states found that 1.2 percent of those freed after serving a murder sentence were rearrested on homicide charges within three years – the lowest rate among all reported crimes by released prisoners. “This is a very difficult issue, and unless we lock everyone up for life they’re all coming back sooner or later,” said Martin Horn, a former New York City corrections and probation commissioner who now teaches at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

And, individuals who earn 4-year degrees while in prison do even better!  But, of course, many of these folks have difficulty finding jobs, and so, end-up voting Democratic, which is one reason why the Republicans want to keep them in jail, or at least keep their voting rights suppressed when they get out.

Hear that, guys? Murder someone, and you get a free education! Dang, I could be debt free right now if I’d known that five years ago. 😏

Yes. The loss to the society of the murdered one is not enough. We must enrich lawyer scumbags to the tune of 1.2 million as well just to make sure the offender never ever could be in any position to give something back to to the society.

It really seems you are on the same side as the murderer and not the society. Both of you wish to indulge yourself at the expense of the society.
