Not as many as you think, sweetheart. There just aren't any safe roads to travel to get them. Once you have one, the militia will get their hands on them. Then, where will you get another? These are very simple villages we're talking about. There are barely any places to hide. People can hardly risk running to the border as refugees, I doubt many risk buying weapons. If they do, they join the rebels.

That's not true at all. Well, maybe in croc ville where you live.  I would have to jump through hoops singing Yankee Doodle if I wanted a license to own a gun. And . . . you just hit against my point. Just because some people have access doesn't mean all people do and just because a village has an AK doesn't mean that a woman getting raped does. If guns were an option for these women, I assure you, they would avail themselves of it.

Those rebels engage in the same janjaweed shit. Perhaps they wouldn't Shell (shoot their assailant), because their culture tells them from birth that they are inferior. Perhaps theyre made to be the victim from day one by a bunch of tribal minded douchebags (on both sides), perhaps they breed and cheer on the "soldiers" from their own side day in and day out. You might shoot a rapist, because you can, you feel empowered to do so..do they? Seems unlikely. The janjaweed rapists are somebodies good guys too, that's the trouble.
Just checked btw, the region is an open arms market...would you like to buy an APC or an RPG? Maybe some artillery? It's all on sale, dead cheap.

Dead cheap to you is impossible to another. However, I will completely agree that lack of empowerment is the crux of the problem. I suppose that is what I am trying to get across. Their society breeds strong women, but not strong in the sense that they know their worth.

Weapons markets don't crop up in S. Africa to cater to me, they crop up for the locals, they can afford them.
There's an african mother somewhere right now extolling the virtues of subservience to their daughter. Explaining to their son that those other people aren't really people. Daddy is re-enforcing it. Whatever happens after that...par for the course. Obviously we're talking about crimes against humanity here, but the shoe has been on the other foot, and I'm having trouble mustering up the easy kind of sympathy that I would normally find. Pisses me off.

I have a buddy from S. Africa that wished he had bought an AK, he lost everything, white cabbage farmer. (he's all set up in N Florida now, happy as hell, just to add a touch of happy ending to the thread)

Some of them do. Some of them try to run. It is what it is. You can't expect people to just live a certain way, embrace violence, do things the way you want them to do it in order for them to be recognized as victims.
