Maher/Corden and obesity

What?

I mean, there are a lot of factors that go into what we eat; I recognize poverty as a big one. But... ancient, hardwired reasons beyond our power? Don't know about that one. We have more agency than that.

Do we?  Why do we feel hungry?  Why do we overeat?  Why do we binge? Why do we seek out high calorie foods and find them so delicious? Why do we trend towards inactivity?

These are strategies for staying alive. Your agency is not in control of them, it didn't decide them, it isn't exactly stellar at overriding them. It's our own biology working against us, whatever our agency is, if it is. So that's the hill we have to climb, the weight agency has to lift. Lets imagine that agency can lift 90% of it....the remaining 10% will just tack on, year after year, as your metabolism slows down and you succumb to injury and use damage.

-and we know that agency isn't 90% of obesity. It's not even the strongest predictor.

In fact, you are attempting to discredit personal responsibility. But keep telling yourself you aren't. I couldn't care less. I, for one, choose to take responsibility for my bad habits, and do something about them. Call me crazy I guess.

As do we all, to one extent or another, even if our responsible agency isn't up to the task.  Hence..deep personal shame, which often leads to comfort eating, lol.

.

??? I have control over all those things if I try to?

If anything, our "hardwired" biology makes us super adaptable and makes it more possible to control those things...

We like to think so, and yet.

You controlled your genetics?  You control what tastes good to you?  You control feeling hungry?  You control the circumstances of your life, society, and civilization and how that interfaces with the previous items?

No, ofc not.  That's complete and utter hubris.  No one, absolutely no one, is arguing that you have no control.  Whatever control we have is necessarrily limited, and demonstrably compromised....and not the strongest predictor of obesity or of weight loss.

Everyone has "control"...and yet........

Go work at the VA for the day. Tell the homeless vet who lost one leg overseas and the other to diabetes after he came home; who is hospitalized because he was making suicide threats after his wife left him due to alcohol abuse; tell him he should eat a salad instead of that pizza because it’s “bad for him”.  Tell him you’re there to teach him about counting carbs.

Then come back and tell us what he threw at your head.

I'm 40 pounds overweight.  I've been in pt for 20 years.  I used to be a marathon runner.  I emphatically will not reach my goal of 190, no matter how much of my "control" I exert...and I like to think I have a shit-ton of that...but people like me call it discipline, not control, and we understand it's limits, lol.
